Re: Wireless stopped working on wifes netbook

I'm not sure if it will have the desired effect of unblocking the hard block or not, but could try

Code: Select all

sudo service network-manager restart
and

Code: Select all

sudo rfkill unblock all
for the soft block.

Re: HP runs HOT,Lenevo runs cool on Mint 15 - similar hardwa

I don't have an answer to why it is going on, but I can attest that the heat issue with the first generation i3 was horrible. I had 2 different Dell laptops, both with the i3, and both lasted all of 18 months. They were like having an oven running nearby. They were clean of debris, fans were operati...

Re: Should I try the torrent thing, or just order DVD?

If you download you have the immediate availability of the file. You can choose how you want to install...DVD or USB. And downloads don't scratch :)

Re: Coming back to Linux Mint

Is it possible to install Mint WITHOUT grub, on the Windows bootloader? Definite no on that one. The problem with Windows bootloader is it only cares about Windows. It will not look for any other OS, which is also why it is recommended to install Linux after Windows is installed in order to end up ...

Re: I just installed LM15 cinnamon. I now have no sound

Has sound worked correctly and out of the box on any other distros? If so, which distro/version/kernel version? As stated, if it's a kernel issue you can try a newer one from the repos and test your sound. Also check to make sure sound levels aren't turned all the way down (distro settings, not volu...

Re: Using KDE vs Adding KDE desktop?

OP, you may be misunderstanding a bit of how the desktop environments work. When you install them, they don't interact with each other. For example, adding KDE does not mean you're running Gnome or Cinnamon plus KDE. You choose which desktop you wish to be running in the session on the login screen ...

Re: Can you use KDE and Cinnamon?

There are desktop packages in the repos to download for each of the DE's. There may be meta packages there to do so but I can't recall. You do not want to do a full install of Mint KDE or you'll just write over your existing install with the same distro, different DE.

Re: Can you use KDE and Cinnamon?

Yes you can install KDE, LXDE, XFCE, etc. Once installed you just logout, select the DE you want to use at the login screen and then login.

Re: Help, considering migrating to Mint

No you won't be able to upgrade in Mint. It's been done, but it is neither supported nor recommended. Fresh install at each distro release if you want to run the latest. Mint 13 is supported for 5 years, with 4 remaining now. The others (non LTS) are short term releases just like in Ubuntu. You can ...

Re: Can the KDE desktop be 'locked down'?

There may be ways but I haven't tried. Users like you mentioned would be perfect for Chrome OS on a Chromebook. You just can't break it and it's dumbed down to the point where anyone can use it with practically no computer knowledge. Easiest Linux distro out there, but it is locked down like OSX to ...

Re: Help, considering migrating to Mint

If you're comfortable with Ubuntu you will be comfortable with Mint because Mint truly IS Ubuntu with some Mint stuff added on top of it. Mint uses Ubuntu repos plus Mint repos. The underlying system is Ubuntu and Clem adds codecs, customization, Mint tools and a few other things. But in terms of ma...

Re: failed to install Broadcomm STA wireless driver

Is it because you're using an older, no longer supported version where the repos have changed locations so the OS can't find the software until the repo URL's are corrected?

Re: Does Everything Require Terminal ?

I guess I just feel a little lied to. I had found many articles on the web saying that the days of using terminal were done. I am not unwilling to learn terminal, just not what I was expecting. It's a definite change and a bit comforting to those users who may have enjoyed computers during the days...

Re: Compatible wireless router?

I have yet to find a model of router in the US that won't work with Linux. Oddly I have heard complaints about BT routers in the UK, but I am unsure if they have issues or if it's a configuration issue the user must go through to get it working properly. Anyway, your router has no way of knowing if ...

Re: Wireless not working!

Looks like you installed the STA driver, which is not for this card as far as I know. I think you need the b43. To test if I'm right, just open a terminal and sudo modprobe -r wl That command disables the STA driver temporarily. Then run sudo modprobe b43 See if wireless works, but it may take a few...

Are you back at a normal desktop? If you are, are you saying the wireless is not working at all and you have a Broadcom device?

Could you provide the outputs of these in a terminal:

and

Re: Netbook problems

I have a Chromebook and it's relatively underpowered as well. It struggles on heavier desktop environments (DE's) so like above mentioned, perhaps using LXDE or XFCE will give you a better experience. Netbooks are normally a lot slower than a PC with a bit more processor and RAM capability. I would ...

Re: Wireless not working!

I can't watch the video from work so I'm assuming it went into a terminal type of display. What I would do is force a restart (hold down power button until it restarts), see if you can get to a desktop, then run updates again via terminal instead of update manager (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-ge...

Linux is pretty boring once you have it configured how you want it. Daily maintenance = keeping it updated. That's about it, but it stays out of the way so you can just enjoy using your computer.

I do not know what causes this, but this post is not the first to state this problem. I have seen it posted a few times on Ubuntu forums as well.
