Re: Connect Wireless

Since nobody mentioned it yet, one key in Linux is to know what make/model device you have. The key is to know what it is as Linux Mint sees it Since it's a usb device, can you open a terminal and enter lsusb and paste here the output you get? Or just type the one line if there's a lot of data and y...

Re: Freezes and unexpected shutdowns

Do you have a video card or are you using onboard graphics on the motherboard? Could be a video driver issue if you have nVidia or ATi.

Re: What are the disadvantages of upgrading Mint?

Saving your home partition sounds like a great idea, and often is, but sometimes can result in some odd behaviors until you figure out the differences in how those files interact with the newly installed version of Mint. I did it quite a few times and sometimes ended up saving my music, pictures, et...

Re: Should I install Mint 13 or 15?

13 is more stable than 15 for many users. Standard releases from Ubuntu, from which Mint is based, are built from Debian Unstable. LTS versions are normally built from Debian Testing, which is by its nature more stable than Unstable. That contributes a great deal to the stability in the LTS versions...

Ok so you need a newer kernel to support the card. Should be plenty of guides online for how to install a newer kernel.

Re: ath9k modification --> no wifi connection

You can also check lsmod and if acer_wmi is active, blacklist it via gksudo gedit /etc/modules and add blacklist acer_wmi If it ISN'T active, then make sure it is NOT blacklisted in that file. If it has no impact after changing it and restarting, then just return it to the state it was in previously.

Re: ath9k modification --> no wifi connection

Nohwcrypt should not be the cause of no wireless at all. I would first suggest looking at that file you edited, which is etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf, and make sure you typed it in correctly. The command you should have started that line with is "echo", not #. I just want to make sure you understand $ ...

Re: wireless broken; Mint 15; Sony Vaio Pro 13

First step is to find out what wireless device you have in the computer (as Linux Mint sees it). Could you open a terminal and type in lspci -nn and type or paste back here in your response whatever info that command returns in the terminal? From there we can figure out what is needed, but be aware ...

Re: Why are these installed and should I be concerned

What has my browser been leaking? What do those addons do? I think those are carryovers from the Unity desktop in Ubuntu. Mark Shuttleworth's explanation is at http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/1182 I don't believe they're active in any DE except Unity, but I would certainly rather have them...

Re: How avoid manually enabling wireless every time I boot?

I did find reference to automatically enabling wireless without a script. You can edit (as root) /etc/network/interfaces and add the following to the end of the file

Code: Select all

auto wlan0
Not sure it'll work but easily reversibly by removing that line if it doesn't work after a restart.

Re: How avoid manually enabling wireless every time I boot?

I'm wondering if a script to execute sudo ifconfig wlan0 up would work? Perhaps reboot so your wireless is not enabled, don't enable it with the hardware keys, and try running that in a terminal to see if it turns the wireless on. If that works, then we'd just have to figure out how to execute that ...

The good news is Mint 13 is supported for another 4 years so I would imagine by then you'll need to replace the computer anyway.

Re: no Wireless connection

I would suggest following the link below. Chilli555 on the Ubuntu forums is the best network person I've seen when it comes to Linux. Worst case, open an account there and send him a message and see if he'll help. Any issue with wireless on Mint is likely to exist on Ubuntu as well (except for LMDE,...

Re: stability of Linux mint 15 and Linux mint 13.

This does bring up a dilemma for those of us who use Mint as their primary desktop as opposed to a hobby and it has to do with the goal of these releases. Mint is based on Ubuntu but Ubuntu has changed how they release editions. Starting with 13.04 ( Mint 15 ) non-LTS releases are only supported fo...

Re: Need help in choosing the right distribution

PCLinuxOS is also a nice distro, rolling release, fast. Mint, Ubuntu and others are awesome as well. Ubuntu may be a bit heavy for your RAM and CPU unless you go with a derivative (Lubuntu/Xubuntu). All are easy to configure and manage. Mageia may also be a nice one to try.

Re: Upgrade from 14 to 15 failed...please help...!

Upgrade via repo changes is not supported for Mint and is a really bad idea. You can see discussion on it in the forum and the blog. I'd just recommend you install fresh over the top of your Mint 14 partitions rather than fight a downward spiral of issues.

Re: Wifi Problem Compaq cq58-278sa

I've seen several complaints about your particular wireless device, but changing to a Netgear router is interesting that your card works fine with it. I'm wondering if it's possible to change channels on the BT router and achieve the same result or if something unique to the BT is just finicky with ...

OP, by your last post I'm not sure what you are trying to do at this point. Do you want WIndows back, Mint fixed or reinstalled, etc?
