Re: Wifi Problem Compaq cq58-278sa

It very well could be a router issue. I'm curious....are you now using the RT2800 driver or the RT5390? You can find out via

Code: Select all

lsmod

Re: Removing older OS.

If you go into gparted you can either delete that partition and then merge the space with another partition (from a live session!) or you can repartition and reinstall Mint 15.

Re: What Are Good Reasons For Using Linux Instead Of Windows

For me a lot of it came out of a need to have an OS when my HDD failed back in 2009. I jumped on Ubuntu to have a working computer on the cheap and from there I realized WHY I should run a Linux distro rather than Windows. 1. Spent so much of my time fixing Windows issues on various computers becaus...

Re: Problems with Mint!

Keith, any chance you could try a different distro just to see if it's a hardware/driver issue causing the failures? Drivers are built into the kernel (modules) so I wonder if this would happen in PCLinuxOS (very easy distro to use like Mint) or another that may be equally easy in self-configuration...

Re: Strange wireless problem Mint 15 (still not solved)

http://askubuntu.com/questions/303415/ubuntu-13-04-ralink-rt5390-wont-work-after-upgrade That link has a response to the problem with a list of steps to take to fix it. Basically what you're doing is installing the RT5390sta driver and then blacklisting (disabling) the RT2800 and all the RT2x00 driv...

Re: Strange wireless problem Mint 15 (still not solved)

I may be able to but I won't be up much longer today. The way to know what wireless device you have is lspci | grep -i Wireless My concern is whether you have the correct driver active and that it's the only one. I just looked mine up and mine says 04:00.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. RT2790 Wir...

Re: Strange wireless problem Mint 15 (still not solved)

I think you may be using the rt2800 driver but may be better off using a different one, such as the rt2860sta, for example. I'm not sure though and it depends on which device you have. The LSPCI (lowercase) output will tell us what that device is.

Re: Strange wireless problem Mint 15 (still not solved)

Hmmmm...must have been the capital V that threw off the lspci. Probably should be lowercase. Apologies for that. Looking at the RT2800 issue now. It used to be problematic with how the system configured it and needed to blacklist some of the drivers, but not sure these days. Will post back if I find...

Re: Strange wireless problem Mint 15 (still not solved)

When you do connect, does it perform normally? Any disconnects or other random issues? I'm wondering if you have the wrong driver activated, or possibly your system is trying to activate two drivers for the same device or something equally as odd. When you have it working can you post the output of ...

Re: pc or mac?

Lenovo now also makes a Chromebook for education purposes only. The key to that is all drivers that support Chrome OS are Linux, so I would bet that Lenovo is paying special attention to certain models of laptops for Linux compatibility. I'm not sure they push that across various model lines at Leno...

Re: Base/structure relationship of Mint to Ubuntu, Debian?

Mint relies on all the Ubuntu repos and adds its own as well. It's fully based on Ubuntu, but Mint 15 I believe removes all pieces of Unity. You can reinstall them if you wish, but they're removed initially. If Mint separates, it has not begun in the current and past versions. They differ from Debia...

Re: Upgraded from 13 to 15 and broke it.

You're going to overwrite, no way around it. Run the live session, copy files you want to save to some other media, then install over your borked Mint upgrade reusing that partition.

Re: pc or mac?

Running Linux on a Macbook is not as easy as on a PC. Search the forums for Macbook and you'll see lots of requests for help due to quirks with it. I own 3 Macbook Pros and I would not put Linux on them because OSX is so similar in operation, although locked down in customization. It's fast and work...

Re: Mint's appearance makes my eyes bleed

Do you mean that it bothers you or that it physically is painful to look at? If it's painful, as in eye strain or headache, could it be a resolution that isn't matched well with the monitor or laptop screen? I'd check what your native screen resolution is and compare to Mint. Perhaps trying a differ...

If you are able to get to the URL 192.168.1.1 and are prompted for username and password, that's where you can access the wireless settings of the router and enable it, update firmware, change security settings, etc. You should be able to enable it there as well, unless of course the software your I...

Re: LMDE or Linux Mint main edition: Which way ?!

I've used both and I found LMDE to be snappier, streamlined and just more responsive. But it was also a bit more of a challenge to keep up to date. Kernel updates, at least back then, required reinstall of the Broadcom driver on my machine. Update packs sometimes broke the system. I finally moved aw...

Not sure if it'll help, but I found

Code: Select all

gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true
at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticsTouchpad, which should also apply to Mint. However, that post is not new so I'm still looking.
