Re: LinuxMint a boring OS?

But I can't complain. It's free and it's running smoothly. :) I remember a thread with a similar title to this one on the PClinuxOS forum a few years back. It got all kinds of annoyed "knee-jerk" comments from readers until they read the OP properly and could see it was a compliment to the distro! ...

Re: A+ for Mint 17.2: No Zeitgeist Installed

I see Activity Log Manager in Software Manager but how would I would I go about installing Zeitgeist itself? I was posting instructions but xenopeek beat me to it! By the way, on Mint 13 (which I still use) Zeitgeist seemed to come enabled by default. I switched it off and got a performance benefit...

Re: no sound in YouTube and other browser Flash content

Solved my own problem. I went to Control Centre > Sounds and checked my output settings - changed them to "built-in analogue stereo" from another analogue codec that was selected, and now all seems well. I still don't know how it happened as it's been months since I last adjusted my sounds settings ...

SOLVED no sound in YouTube and other browser Flash content

I am running Mint 13 64-bit MATE. All aspects of sound playback from Audacity, Clementine and VLC seem to be fine but I cannot get any sound from YouTube videos on any browser. I have done a fair bit of online research but feel I'm getting nowhere. I'm sorry but can anyone please help me debug this?...

Re: Anyone run Windows in a virtual environment?

Another thing to take into account is that Virtual Box won't accept USB. Installing stuff in whatever you have in your virtual environment is still possible, but can be rather cumbersome. In my personal experience, anyway. I cannot comment on your problems with MIDI and music technology but Virtual...

Thanks for your advice David. I'll brave the big download and give this a spin as soon as I can.

Re: which version of VMWare Player on Mint 13?

Thanks Fred. I live in the countryside and my Internet is often slow - a 200Mb+ download which might not work is a slight pain, which is the main reason I asked. I have a couple of leads I'm going to follow, even if one of them does involve gritting my teeth and downloading the big bundle! https://b...

Re: which version of VMWare Player on Mint 13?

Without sounding like I'm trying to be sarcastic--wouldn't it be best to just try it? Even if it worked for everyone else, it might not work for you. Dear Fred - thanks for your reply and I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear. I was not suggesting I'd just like to try VMWare as a virtualisation opti...

which version of VMWare Player on Mint 13?

VirtualBox is my virtualisation solution of choice. However, for reasons too complicated to explain, I would very much like to install VMWare Player on my 64-bit Linux Mint 13. I have found a link to the current version (VMware Player 7.1.2) - but can anyone advise me as to whether or not this versi...

Re: Inkscape 0.91 on Linix Mint 13?

Thanks @richyrich. I'll let you know how I get on. I have read about the performance boost that comes with the latest Inkscape. I also know I'll want to upgrade to LM 17 before too long - but LM 13 is working so well at present in all respects that I don't want to rock the boat for a little while yet!

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to install the latest version of Inkscape (0.91) on Mint 13? And if so, how? Thanks in anticipation if anyone can help.

Re: Different DEs

Depends partly on what kind of project you'd like. You can have fun with Fluxbox, although I haven't played with it for some years now. "Out of the box", Mint's spin on XFCE is quite superb, IMHO. I am now using it on an elderly netbook and finding it both stylish and lightweight. As a regular MATE ...

Re: Ubuntu pandering for cash

For myself, I am uneasy about some of Ubuntu's practices - the adware, the way they do all they can to avoid calling themselves "Linux" or "GNU/Linux" on their website. I haven't used it for years myself. That said, the quality and depth of Mint's LTS releases have been my mainstay for so long now a...

Re: My first year here...

Happy anniversary, Jim - and the work you are doing on behalf of Mint, even if it seems modest to you, will be well worthwhile. I have been using Mint steadily for nearly five years now - the distros I worked with for 5-6 years before then were excellent in their own way, but now I have found this o...

Re: would population=more viruses for Linux?

Many good points. @Pjotr hits one nail on the head - the main risk would not be "viruses" in the Windows sense but people being tricked into downloading malign software and updates from bogus or corrupted repositories. This is especially an issue for distros like Mint which take advantage of a Ubunt...

Re: ever spread the word to non-techy ppl?

Yes, several people - and once they understand that there ARE substitutes for Microsoft Word (and when they really believe me when I tell them there's little or no risk from viruses) they get on fine. One person I "lost" was a friend who loved Linux Mint but had problems finding a VPN client that wo...

Re: Mint vs Ubuntu with Cinnamon

There was a similar thread a few weeks back about why one might prefer the Ubuntu MATE edition to Mint's. This is a different situation of course in that you'd have to add CInnamon to your Ubuntu - but even if there was an Ubuntu Cinnamon edition I wouldn't see it swaying me from the Mint one. I gue...

Re: What Linux Distros do you currently use?

You might enjoy doing a full install to a usb stick. I've done this many times and am going to put Mint 17 MATE on a 32 gig usb stick as a portable system. It is not a great deal more involved than what you just did. Using gparted you format the usb stick to ext 4. I usually add a bit of swap on th...

Re: What Linux Distros do you currently use?

Both the main PCs in our household run Mint 13 MATE, which gives complete satisfaction and is supported for nearly two more years. However, I am now playing with Mint 17.1 XFCE on a persistent USB setup, created easily using these very complete instructions: http://tuxtweaks.com/2014/03/create-linux...
