Re: problems enabling wifi on Compaq Mini 110

YES. IT WORKS FOR ME TOO! Please forgive my shouting but JeremyB's commands have worked and I am a very happy man. Thanks to both JeremyB (for providing the solution) and Pjotr (without whose encouragement I would have given up a week ago). If either of you are ever visiting beautiful Norfolk, in Ea...

Re: problems enabling wifi on Compaq Mini 110

Thanks both of you for advice.

I'm away now for a couple of days but I will try this fix at the weekend and will let you know how it goes.

Re: problems enabling wifi on Compaq Mini 110

I will certainly contact the person you suggested. As a fall back - if I cannot get the onboard wifi to work - would it be worth me buying a USB wireless card or dongle that would do the job for me? I know nothing at all about these devices or their Linux drivers. However, if feasible it might be mo...

Re: problems enabling wifi on Compaq Mini 110

Thanks very much Pjotr! I have worked my way through the suggestions at https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/internet#TOC-Broadcom:-try-another-driver, but nothing has worked yet despite very many tinkerings and reboots. The XFCE Driver Manager seems to identify the Broadcom card all r...

SOLVED problems enabling wifi on Compaq Mini 110

I have acquired a little HP Compaq Mini 110 netbook and am running Mint 17.1 XFCE on it, freshly installed and fully updated. I'm very pleased with its performance. But I cannot get it to detect or connect to any wifi network. The wireless card is a Broadcom BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY. I am getting ti...

Re: Windows in Virtualbox

Good advice from Pierre and Flemur. I have depended upon VirtualBox to run Adobe Creative Suite for a least six years now. I have found it totally dependable, capable of handling tough-image editing tasks without sweat. Once set up, it just works and works for you. In my experience, WIndows boots fa...

Re: best all in one laser printer for linux mint 17

Not an all-in-one, I know, but I recently bought a Brother HL-2250DN, which was cheap and worked well out of the box. I am a light user, however - if I needed something more robust I would probably be investing in an HP.

Re: What's in Your Virtualbox?

Windows XP, to let me run InDesign, Photoshop and CorelDraw. This VM is not connected to the Internet and it rolls along just fine. Three years ago (say), you would also have found at anyone time two or three other distros that I was learning, playing with or auditioning. But not now. I am honestly ...

Re: choosing a Mint for Compaq Mini

Thanks very much, all of you, for your prompt replies. I will try XFCE - before I download 17 I'll give it a spin with the 13 XFCE edition, which I already have here on an ISO.

choosing a Mint for Compaq Mini

I have recently acquired a netbook - a Compaq Mini 110. It seems nice. It has Windows 7 installed ... but I'd like to be able to run Linux on it, preferably booting from USB. I use Mint 13 and 17 on all my desktops at present. I wonder if there is a Mint flavour that would suit. Or can anyone recomm...

Re: Forum shouldn't have level based on nr of posts

I do see these various points, but please folks let's keep it as it is. The "level" simply gives an indication of how active someone is on the forum and no more should be read into it. A lot of the means for scoring "reputation" can get very subjective - and I hate fora where you feel constantly enc...

Re: Linux Mint is the right choice for experienced users?

What @karlchen said - I am an experienced user and I have long stuck with Mint LTS editions because they need virtually no maintenance and because I have access to everything in the vast Ubuntu repositories and libraries of PPAs. In other words, I can just get on with my work.

Re: What was your Linux noob experience like?

Eleven years ago next month, encouraged by my brother, I bought SUSE 9.1 as a box set. I have used Linux every day since then, although I also retain Windows in a virtual install to run the Adobe Creative Suite. I found SUSE hard going at first, partly as I just didn't have the Linux mindset - for m...

Thanks to everyone for their contributions to an informative thread about what has become a very emotive topic. I have seen the very heated discussions going on on the Debian and PCLinuxOS forums and not known what to make of it all - especially at a time when another topic under discussion in the L...

I am not able to offer much help with your two specific queries. However, when it comes to installing software your first port of ca...

Re: Why Linux? Why not Microsoft?

It's nice that I don't have to pay a licence fee ... but there are more important reasons why I use Linux - security, supreme ease of maintenance once you are used to it, and a feeling of control over one's working life. For example, if I power down a Linux laptop in a cafe, when I am about to run a...

Re: Linux distro wars/communities

My own belief is that we should do all we can to help new users even if we find some of their questions (and their lack of instinct to search) a bit frustrating at times. Those of us (including myself) who have spent many years immersed in Linux can lose sight very easily of how unfamiliar many of t...
