Re: Ummm Unstable much?

@ datajunkie - you have specific requirements and need infinite configurability. This isn't the right distro for you - try Gentoo, Slack or Arch.

Re: Linux Mint LXQt

So, I guess that's my question here, will Linux Mint LXQt become a reality, or is it only wishful thinking? I think it very likely you can install it on Mint 17. I asked about this a few months ago - but I haven't got round to taking action. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=147&t=172449&...

Re: Viruses invaders?

Should desktop Linux become more mainstream it will certainly be targetted more by hackers. The strength of its security architecture will make it a tough target compared with Windows but I think criminals might try quite different approaches based on deceiving the user. For example, we might see at...

Re: Do you Distro-Hop?

I have been using Linux for ten years now. I haven't distro-hopped over that time - I have had committed relationships with openSUSE, PCLinuxOS and Mint. However, a few years ago I was regularly using VirtualBox to try out 'new' (to me) distros that caught my attention. I learnt a good deal doing th...

Re: Thank You Apple! Or Why I love Mint even more.

The great thing about Mint is that the development team really do listen to their user community, particularly regarding revolutionary UI changes. You can in fact run a whole variety of desktop environments on Mint if you wish, but by default you are offered a traditional-type desktop. The more radi...

Re: Why i hate Mint and Love OpenSuse! (packages kept back)

Nikolai_D - thanks for your entertaining post. It brought back my own memories of Suse, which was my first distro (Suse 9.1 in 2004 - ten years ago!!). I used Suse for four years (finishing at 10.2). Yes, even then I could do everything graphically, except for setting up fstab and installing non-rep...

Re: Rolling Release "Mania"...

I have enjoyed using a rolling release distro (PCLinuxOS) in the past and I can see the advantages of theoretically never having to reinstall. However, in a production environment (where breakage of my workflow can result in delays that can affect my clients, or keep me up at night when I'd rather s...

Re: LXqt desktop on Mint 13

That PPA only supports LXQt for newer release of Ubuntu / Linux Mint. Thanks very much for your prompt response. I was excited by what I saw of RazorQT several months ago and I'm keen to keep an eye on this project. You are confirming what I suspected about the PPA. No matter - it was worth asking!...

LXqt desktop on Mint 13

Is it possible for me as a user of Mint 13 to install and play with (at my own risk) the LXqt desktop? Have any other Mint 13 users tried this? I have added the Lubuntu repo at ppa:lubuntu-dev/lubuntu-daily but this seems only to be offering me LXDE, rather than the newest version of the desktop. I ...

Re: About Linux Mint 17

I recently installed Linux mint 17, but I really can't see much of a difference to linux mint 16. As a long-term support release, Mint 17 will be supported with updates until 2019. You will also have the opportunity to install significant upgrades over that time if you chose to install backports too.

Re: Linux = more maintenance time?

Interesting discussion here. Leaving the legal issues aside: From the situation described in the OP there may be a considerable learning curve for sysadmins who are not yet familiar with Linux ... but once you are through that, I feel confident that you will have fewer day-to-day maintenance tasks t...

Re: Qiana doesn't seem to be popular

Even after a few MONTHS it will be too early to see any real trend here. My household is delighted with the previous LTS release, Maya - especially now we have installed and tamed the backports! It is great an is supported for ages yet. We'll shift our computers over to Qiana eventually but probably...

Interesting idea. For those of us who have been in the Linux world for several years there will be a real irony if this project gets a lot of followers - returning Ubuntu to its Gnome 2 roots!

Actually I just tried that yesterday, and YES it works!!! We have an XP corporate license, so we are good. Alan - that's really good news. I'd be interested to hear how your testing and evaluation goes. If you have a success going down the Linux/VB route, it deserves to be publicised. VirtualBox is...

Re: 2014-The year of the Linux desktop?

Thanks for your latest post, Alan. I don't blame you for your decision. It pains me to say this but I am now cooler than I was at recommending business colleagues of mine to switch to Linux, although this is largely because of Exchange/VPN perils. Plus our specialized applications, which I *might* b...

Re: 2014-The year of the Linux desktop?

In my experience, the number 1 thing holding many companies back from exploring the possiblity of using Linux as a Enterprise Desktop OS is the lack of MS Office and/or an Exchange capable email client other than Outlook. MS Outlook/Exchange compatibility is a huge issue - also reliable, stable, ha...
