Distro Hopping

I have to admit it...for 9 years I have been a compulsive distro hopper. I have continually bounced back and forth between Mint and various other distros. It has finally come down to bouncing back and forth between Mint and Kubuntu, so today I took the action I should have taken long ago. I set up d...

Are you sure you didn't just have a strange dream last night? Tessa is the upcoming 19.1 release, not due out until November/December. Looking at the Mint Community site, it is still no where near entering testing.

Re: Video is less fluid in LMDE3 than in LMDE2

Hello Pio2001. You say that you upgraded to LMDE 3 from LMDE 2. If you are saying you did an in-place upgrade rather than a new install, I suspect some of your problem could lie there. I have almost exactly the same computer specs as yours and watching Youtube videos or video files in VLC is always ...

Welcome Tater. I think you will find things on Mint to be more straightforward do-able than many other linux distros. Happy Minting!

I have never, nor will I ever even try out Timeshift. I am a dedicated believer in Clonezilla, and do a weekly image of my system. In many years now it has never failed to save my behind.

Re: Going back to LM 18.3

I found myself running into a few irritating niggles with the Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce desktops of Mint 19, which may have been kernel related. I then tried LMDE3 and everything works properly and fast. I like Cinnamon, so I may stay with this branch of Mint for a while.

Continuing the Mint 19 Adventure

Mint 19 MATE didn't work out very well on my system. It might have been because I didn't restrict the updates enough and the troublesome .24 kernel got installed. Soooooooo...I just did a fresh install of Mint 19 Cinnamon using the v2 .iso and installed wine stable on it as I did on my previous MATE...

Re: Unity desktop ?

The Unity 7 maintainers (yes it is still active) have been permitted to move the Unity 7 packages to the Ubuntu Universe repository from the PPA. To properly install it you need to install Ubuntu 18.04, then you can just do a "sudo apt install ubuntu-unity-desktop" and it will install properly on Ub...

Fixed .iso files are now on the Mint heanet mirror. You can tell them by the "v2" in the file name.

Just downloaded the stable version dated today. Been running Kubuntu 18.04, but have been wanting to try out the Neon as it runs the most up-to-date version of Plasma on the stable 18.04 lts base.

Re: Excited for 19.x

Just sneaked a peek at the Heanet Mint Mirror and lo and behold saw the Mint 19 Beta iso files. Just did a fresh install of Cinnamon 19 64bit Beta, installed all the usual software I install, including wine, and after an hour of use it seems to run as smooth and stable as Mint 18.3. That makes me a ...

I have a 1TB WD My Passport that I use for my backups and I formatted the entire drive FAT so that it can be read by either Linux or Windows. That setup has never failed me.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Based on past experiences with dist-upgrading, my humble opinion is that you should just back up all your data files and do a fresh install of Kubuntu 18.04. Far fewer headaches.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I do still plan on installing KDE onto Mint when the public beta of Mint 19 XFCE is released. Hopefully that will provide the stability of Mint along with the excellence and low resource usage of Kubuntu 18.04.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

@exploder:

Back on Kubuntu 18.04 myself. It seems to be getting even more stable as time goes by. And you are right about it being "light". I checked Ksysguard while watching a video and it was only using 690MB resources. I'm starting to think it is a keeper.

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Well, I've tried just about every flavor of the 18.04 releases on the Ubuntu side and none have the stability I associate with Linux Mint. I think my best bet is to run 18.3 KDE until the release of Mint 19, and then do the install of KDE onto Mint XFCE. Then I have the nice stable distro underneath.

Using Ubuntu 18.04 with the Unity 7 desktop installed, and I've got to say it is a treat...equal to Mint in stability.
