Re: LM Update Manager could check for Internet

It's already been done in the past. Update Manager would ping Google to check for internet connection. Unfortunately, there was a big unjustified uproar about Mint having "spyware" because of it.

Re: Mint or Ubuntu

Welcome to Linux Mint. Unless you have set up the usb for persistence you won't be able to save changes or downloaded file. Once installed on metal it will work fine.

DistroWatch

Glancing through I didn't see any posts regarding this, but it appears DistroWatch may have been the latest attack victim? The site has been down for a while now. I don't recall any warning about site maintenance. I hope they are OK.

Out of curiosity: why? Is it different from the Linux version?
It allows access to some drm things, such as HBO GO.

Re: Has anyone got a virus by using wine

In all fairness in giving an answer to the question: I have been using wine for 6 years running both the PokerStars software and the Windows version of Firefox and have never contracted a virus.

Nostalgic. My first computer was a Timex-Sinclair 1000.

Yet Another Excellent Mint 17.3 Xfce Review

Dedoimedo just today posted a new review of 17.3 Xfce. Since he is known for calling it as he sees it, and is very stingy about giving 10/10 ratings, we should be very proud of Clem and the team.

Re: Help needed with watching video's on website

Those videos work fine for me in Google Chrome. Did you install the cookies they require for watching the videos?

Re: Firewall

All you need to do is open a Terminal and type:

Code: Select all

sudo ufw enable
Enter your password when it asks for it, and you will then see that it tells you that the firewall is enabled and will automatically start on each new startup.

Welcome cutebay35. Hope 17.3 MATE continues to work well for you. It tends to be pretty reliable.

Welcome to the Linux Mint community GreyGeek. I think I remember seeing you on the Kubuntu Forums a couple years back when I was trying it out for a bit. Glad to have you here.

Re: HELP!! Newbie question..

It looks like it is an Athlon dual-core, 64bit processor first released in 2005. You might try Linux Mint 13 MATE 64bit version and see if that runs faster than the newer versions. Mint 13 is a long term support release that is supported until around April 2017.
