Re: switching users from lockscreen - not possible?!

aha! thanks, so is this just a bug? wasn't being rude, genuinely impressed with Cinnamon, just disappointed it could be missing something small i need to use it.. i'll try that and see how it works.. didn't like the screen i saw before because it was confusing (gave option of opening new session or ...

Re: switching users from lockscreen - not possible?!

ok tried mdmflexiserver, clearly cinnamon is not ready for multiple users (if this is the only way to switch users). thanks but don't worry i'll have to use MATE and check back on the progress of cinnamon in a year or so! for some reason i had assumed 1.4 / LTS would be further advanced. it's a nice...

Re: switching users from lockscreen - not possible?!

i only ran Cinnamon once it's possible i missed something. which menu are you referring to sorry, the mint menu inside the user session? user1 works on computer user1 walks away. screensaver activates user2 needs to use computer. user2 nudges mouse, user2 sees lockscreen of user1. what are they mean...

Re: switching users from lockscreen - not possible?!

ok thanks, so mdm can do sessions..
any way to add a button for that to the lockscreen?
or get system to automatically go to a user menu when resumed?
I can't ask everyone to use the console even if that does work :p

Re: migrating users from Gnome2 to MATE?

thanks. seems like MATE is missing a big opportunity not to allow easy migration/importing of settings from Gnome 2.3, unless anyone knows otherwise? just a question of renaming gconf folders or something?

Re: switching users from lockscreen - not possible?!

well i'm guessing by no replies that there isn't an easy fix/workaround? you should maybe put a big warning "computer can only be used by one person" on Cinnamon because this is something that's not expected of a desktop OS. i'm not complaining it's free i can use something else - but any plans to a...

Re: migrating users from Gnome2 to MATE?

thanks, some nagging feeling tells me MATE is going to be trouble at this point.. why did they name everything silly? that's non intuitive and will mess up scripts and links with other apps etc.. why not gedit_mate or mgedit, mnautilus etc or something logical. MATE doesn't help future GTK3 app comp...

Re: migrating users from Gnome2 to MATE?

i guess the other option is using Gnome-Classic in Ubuntu 12.04, it looks like some themes are compatible http://www.webupd8.org/2012/05/install-ambiance-fixed-for-classic.html Not really sure how MATE compares to Gnome-panel (Classic/fallback) and which has better future app compatibility.. would p...

migrating users from Gnome2 to MATE?

sorry if this is answered but.. i have lots of users set up with a Gnome2 environment (Ubuntu 10.10). Is it possible to migrate all their settings (desktop configs, panel layouts, window themes etc) to MATE? if so, this would be a good reason to use it. i guess this asummes i can even install the sa...

so apps like Ubuntu Tweak don't work with MATE either as they're using the old Gnome2 paths? hmmm :/

switching users from lockscreen - not possible?!

ok, just installed Mint13 Cinnamon after checking it runs ok on my PCs, it does, nice. But a possible showstopper already! Can't see how to switch users from the lockscreen. only button is "Unlock". Clicking on username at top right does nothing. I have a mid-sized NFS (roaming profile style) LAN wh...

Re: [solved] open 2 web browsers system unresponsive or lock

it had enough swap (tried sizes from 1GB to 3GB, larger didn't help). the problem, in a nutshell, I think was that oom_killer wasn't always working. when it killed firefox, system recovered. when it didn't, system would hard lock (no CTRL_ALT_BACKSPACE etc.). i don't know enough about the kernel to ...

Re: [solved] open 2 web browsers system unresponsive or lock

i finally broke down and added another 2GB RAM (for 4GB total) because i needed to get things done. however there is a real problem here, an OS needing reset is never good. it's quite hard to replicate with 2GB and firefox (lots of tabs needed) but should be easy to reproduce on a system with 1GB RAM.

thanks.. i've actually been getting some freezes again recently when running out of ram. not good. may try ram compression.

Re: [solved] open 2 web browsers system unresponsive or lock

the other thing i've been lately doing is to "nice" most big apps like firefox 'which firefox' sudo nano (path to firefox) find the exec line, copy it and # comment out as a backup, add "nice -nX" between the exec and rest of line, i use a number from 2 to 5 normally. when firefox grows, doesn't cau...

Re: Is "auto logout" possible?

right, i just discovered the "gnome-schedule" package. use this, set it to X Application, command is gnome-session-save with options as explained above, seems to work fine! yay. problems 1) users can disable their own scheduled tasks, but this shouldn't be a big problem with non-technical users for ...

Re: Is "auto logout" possible?

just using the gnome-session-save logout would be simplest, if i can get cron to run it.. e..g once a night per user. i know about pkill, used that when setting up accounts, but don't want to run it routinely, might cause user home corruption. might be an ubuntu 10.10/mint10 issue? will try on mint1...
