Re: Is "auto logout" possible?

i tried both (calling a script from crontab, putting command in crontab) neither work adding DISPLAY:=0 stopped script working, probably because its the wrong display number (error opening display..) seems like cron just isn't working, any ideas how to debug that update: checked logs, cron is workin...

Re: Is "auto logout" possible?

(for mint with gnome obviously) i'm trying to work out how to run them automatically after x seconds of idle.. using crontab -e doesn't seem to work...

installing opera 11.50 in mint11 64bit

after adding opera official stable source, mint11 synaptic still offers me 11.10 i have to force version to get 11.50 "(oldstable)" this is incorrect, 11.50 is the current stable for natty. it wants to install a load of libs ia32-libs (version 20090808ubuntu13) will be installed lib32asound2 (versio...

thanks, had similar problem after installing removed package

used Ubuntu Tweak to edit removed.list, one instance of "katya" changed to "natty" and now all's well :)
phew, thought that was going to be pain to fix, but easy (once you know)

Re: How To: Remove Mint Search Completely

most users won't understand why, they'll just change their homepage and blame Mint's addons. i have read some of that link and see it might be google's fault.. in which, what can i say, maybe find another way to raise money through advertising? i am supporting mint by using and promoting it to other...

Re: How To: Remove Mint Search Completely

I do not see how anybody who comes to Mint for the free nature of the product (and the freedom of the product) could ever begrudge using a Mint branded customised search engine if that is what it takes to help Mint grow and develop. Because the Mint Google search customizations are inferior to a re...

Re: [solved] open 2 web browsers system unresponsive or lock

one more thing.. i was next going to look at ZRAM (ram compression, previously known as CompCache) but this doesn't seem to be necessary for me now! might be later though. good articles on arch site: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Maximizing_Performance and for firefox https://wiki.archlinux.o...

Installing Excel 2003 in Mint11

* I'm getting this down roughly because if i try to make it too polished i'll never get round to it. feel free to edit or i'll clean up later * Background: LibreOffice is included with Mint11 and can open both older MS binary and newer MS XML office file formats. However, for some people these appli...

Re: open 2 web browsers - system unresponsive or locks hard

issue definitely resolved here, there have been no further major system hangs despite continued high firefox memory usage. sorry bit scared to try setting things back to confirm exact cause of fix, in case i can't re-fix it! but i believe the most important part of the solution to be this: vm.vfs_ca...

Re: Newbie Linux user, I have some questions about Office pr

ok, Excel2003 (all of Office2003 probably) *does* work in the WINE version 1.2.2 included in Mint11 i had some trouble though.. after a few failed installs I got it (2003 SP1 corporate i think..) to install simply by running the SETUP.EXE directly (not through PlayOnLinux or anything else). there's ...

have to type network printer password every time i print

ok real simple newbie question: i'm used to there being a place, in Gnome, when setting up a network printer, to enter username and password that will always be used for sending to that printer. can't find this in Mint11! so the OS asks for printer password everytime i need to print something ("Auth...

Re: HowTo Improve system responsiveness [tweak] (liquorix)

i think numbers of 1000 are valid, but probably a bad idea

you can test these by typing e.g.

Code: Select all

sudo sysctl -w vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50
no need or even dangerous to add to your .conf immediately, where it'll be permanent..

Re: "Num-lock" enabling

i'm guessing disabling that setting in gconf causes system to use bios default.. which would be a good thing. i've got this problem on a mint11 32bit machine andits v annoying for someone who uses the numpad for spreadsheets etc and has a keyboard with indicators on the base unit (stupid microsoft w...

Re: open 2 web browsers - system unresponsive or locks hard

riiight.. not exactly sure why, but system running a lot better today. currently firefox using 1GB RAM /2.2GB virtual (plus plugin-container using 500MB), 1.5GB of 2GB used total, 800MB of 2.4GB swap in use, and system not pausing, or pausing very little. nice! this is what's added to my /etc/sysctl...
