Re: Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

Oh, and forget to answer this: //I'm not sure what a terminal windown inside Nemo looks like. How is that different from what I get when I rightclick Nemo and choose 'open in terminal'?// In Dolphin, the terminal is a separate pane within Dolphin. In Nemo, it opens a separate Window. In Dolphin, the...

Re: Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

//It's not a bug. It's a result of installing something on Cinnamon that is not compatible with Cinnamon.// Ubuntu Bug #1509562 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dolphin/+bug/1509562 And it's confirmed. Okay? To be clear: It's not the result of installing Dolphin on a non-KDE desktop. It's a...

Re: Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

//That's not a bug. It's simply something that's not recommended.//

You're right except in respect to the bug. The fact that Dolphin's icons are missing after installation is a bug, but not Cinnamon's. Possibly Gnome's?

Re: Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

//As a newbie, I just wanted to thank you for helping to solve my diagonal tearing in Firefox! Much appreciated!// You're welcome! :D I'm not a newbie to linux, but I am to CInnamon. I'm loving it. Wasn't sure I would like it as much as Plasma, but I'm actually liking it more. (No window tiling in P...

Re: Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

Found another bug. Sort of. A regression which is only tangentially related to Cinnamon. Having used KDE for the past couple years, I really enjoyed the built-in terminal offered by Dolphin. However, installing Dolphin in Mint results in missing icons and theming. The issue is discussed in a couple ...

Re: Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

Okay, guess this is a conversation with myself, but maybe this post will help the next newcomer to Cinnamon. I seem to have solved the worst of the tearing, which occurred in Firefox, with the following: In " about:config " (in firefox) make sure "gfx.xrender.enabled" is set to "true". This appears ...

Re: Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaack... Tearing. It's awful. I've been Googling and Googling and there doesn't seem to be a solution for Cinnamon. All I can find is a recommendation to add these two lines to "etc/environment": CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-culling CLUTTER_VBLANK=True I've done that...

Re: First Time Ever using linux

Seconding that, but there may also be Windows/secure boot issues if it's a newer laptop -- also resolvable via the "bios".

Re: Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

One more update: Installed the Intel Driver Update for Linux 16.04 https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/intel-graphics-update-tool-linux-os-v2.0.2 This appears to have solved my multi-monitor hot-plug issues with Cinnamon. Yay! So, I think I'm in clover. Unless some other unforeseen Bug develops,...

Re: Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

1.) Okay, looks like there's a solution for the screen orientation "bug". Here: https://github.com/linuxmint/Cinnamon/issues/6059 Apparently, Gnome allows users to lock screen orientation: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/98455/stop-screen-auto-rotate/ Again, this would be a useful feature...

Re: Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

Installed Kernel 4.10. Suspend recovered normally, but now a whole new problem has cropped up. The YOGA 2, being a 2 in 1 laptop, apparently has an accelerometer. If I tilt the laptop while it's suspended, it wakes with the screen in the clockwise position and will only switch back to 'Normal' if I ...

Re: Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

I for one never had any problems with second monitors or HDMI hot plugging in any of my laptops this last year. I'm glad to hear that. I'll try a different kernel, 4.10, from ubuntu http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D and get back with the results. There are a number of features ...

Trying Cinnamon but something's buggy?

After having serious problems with Plasma (since 16.04) and severe flickering in LibreOffice on two separate systems running Plasma, I finally wiped KDE and installed Cinnamon. I've been running it for two days and have been having a couple serious problems (though fortunately the flickering in Libr...

Changing DPI and "*LCD* Hinting" in Cinnamon

Unfortunately, Cinnamon's fonts looks like crap on my HP laptop -- too small, hard to read, not enough hinting, etc... The settings manager doesn't offer me a way to change the panel font, change DPI or alter LCD Hinting (which is not the same as hinting). Is there a way, as in XFCE, to improve LCD ...

Re: Print Manger Connects to Wireless Brother but HP Fails

Thanks Robw. I'm so frustrated I almost want to go back to Windows -- . I had been running Mint 9 on her Mini. Beautiful little OS. Everything worked except the scanner. I needed to update her OS in order to use the latest XSANE. LISA is a complete wash in my opinion. I don't like Unity - des...

Print Manger Connects to Wireless Brother but HP Fails

I'm trying to set up LMDE for my wife on her MIni. I hit a brick wall today. I was able to install our home wireless printer, a brother (prints beautifully); but the HP printer at work simply refuses to cooperate. When I add "new printer", cups finds the HP, recognizes it, ostesibly installs the cor...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

Hey, I just reinstalled Mint XFCE on my second partition (my dear-god-I-screwed-up-linux-on-my-first-partition partition) and I'm impressed. The font display is much improved. No complaints. Glad to see the update to XFCE 4.8. I'm going to stick with the install this time. I'm running Xubuntu on my ...

Re: problems with XFCE solved?

So that is the question? Can I use XFCE as a daily distribution? Good grief, that's almost impossible to answer. Depends on what you want to do with it. I ran Mint XFCE and the only issue I had was with font display http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=71080 . Other than that, it worke...

Re: Xubuntu 11.04 - sigh...

I couldn't be less satisfied that with Xubuntu. I tried it install the latest release on an old PC I had and while the install seemed to go fine at first Grub would not install correctly. Repeated attempts then started giving me reports about errors on the media (even though the media check ran fin...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

I've already moved on, uninstalled (formatted) the Mint XFCE partition. I'm trying Xubuntu right now, but I can't get Emerald to work and nobody at the forum seems to know how to make it work - might be a Natty issue. At least I could get Emerald to work in Mint. Two things were deal breakers for m...
