Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

I've already moved on, uninstalled (formatted) the Mint XFCE partition. I'm trying Xubuntu right now, but I can't get Emerald to work and nobody at the forum seems to know how to make it work - might be a Natty issue. At least I could get Emerald to work in Mint. Two things were deal breakers for me...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

No matter what fonts you choose (or like) they will still look crummy unless there is proper rendering and that is what the patching does for it... If you want to see the difference, just burn and run the current live iso of LMDE... Which gives me a thought. The whole reason to try XFCE Mint is bec...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

I had looked at LMDE when the original iso came out and promptly threw it in the trash when i saw had poorly fonts would look...it was like an instant "turn off"... I sent a note to CLEM, but he doesn't know me from Adam. Got no response. Have to say... I'll give this another couple of days. If I d...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

The ttf-ubuntu font is in the LMDE repo also the patched libcairo, you can install them. And yes they do work in Debian. Really, if you believe that a font will break your system  Why they are not the default ? I do not know, but the Xfce release seems to be a rush job without the usual Mint ...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

Maybe in this case people should just use XFCE over the Gnome base until somebody starts paying attention to the release and ironing out the details.
In all fairness, this release is still in Beta.

I think feedback is more appropriate than chest thumping.

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

Is there a tutorial for downloading system fonts? You just search the web for "linux fonts"? There's no distinction, that I'm aware of, between "system fonts" and any other font. All you do is to find a font that you like (.ttf) and copy it to your ~/.font folder. If the hidden folder isn't in your...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

Anyway, we cant install Ubuntu fonts in a debian based distro. We would have to obtain the deb files and compile them from source since Ubuntu isnt fully compatible. Hey Nick, FYI, I haven't found this to be true. Fonts aren't platform dependent. In my experience, all that matters is that they are ...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

You compare LMDE XFCE and Ubuntu but Ubuntu uses the Ubuntu fonts and LMDE probably not... Thanks lviolin, but regardless of which font Mint is using, it shouldn't look like it's dying of starvation. If it crawls like a bug, if it bites like a bug, then it's probably a.... I would report it as such...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

Well, it's a setup, a setup to configure your desktop, apps and browser... What do you want more? If this works for you of course... Thanks. I really *do* appreciate your suggestion. It's just that it's a new distro and I'd rather see the problems properly ironed out. My posts are offered more in t...

Thanks Linuxviolin, I'll try that, though that doesn't really solve the problem. That's more of a bandage.

XFCE Locks Up During Boot

Every so often, XFCE comes to a screeching halt while booting up -- keystrokes, nothing works. Can't see rhyme or reason behind the fail, but here is a screen shot:

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

Thanks Merlwiz: Here is your bug fix applied (somewhat improved, but still not as good as it should be). Strike that. Now that I compare, I don't see much difference? Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

I dont know what we are going to do for the main editions now that there is a switch to Unity. Neither do I. The hope is that Unity will mature over the next year and become more configurable. Ultimately, I just don't like being stuck with a panel at the top of my screen, global menu or not. I like...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

I dont think thats the only or best way to get better fonts. I just tried CrunchBang and it was probably the fastest distro I have ever tried on my modern hardware. Everything was instant and I didnt feel like I sacrificed too much functionality for it. Interesting. You were using the latest versio...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

Xubuntu defeats the point of using XFCE because they built it on a Gnome base. If you want a slow bloated distro why not just use Gnome? You incorrectly assume that I'm interested in XFCE because it's less "bloated" (loaded term) than Gnome; but one user's bloat is another user's improvement. I'm i...

Re: Poor font quality in XFCE-Debian

I've also noticed the poor font quality in Debian XFCE. I notice that Xubuntu (XFCE 4.8 ) is quite good, like Ubuntu, and OpenSuse's XFCE, also 4.8, seems very good. I don't know whether the problem is the older version of XFCE or the problem is Debian, but no amount of tweaking (yet) has improved t...

Re: Linux Mint Xfce (201104) released!

Mint Debian is just Debian with some Mint things added: Mintmenu, Mintupdate, Mintwifi, Mintinstall / software manager, ... The system itself is still Debian. So you're thinking a Mint XFCE would have been going to far afield? 4.8 seems to be quite the improvement. I wonder what Debian's time line ...
