Re: Questions about Defragging or Antivirus? Look here first!

I've just noticed that the firewall listed in Control Center / System is disabled. Surely, by default, it should be switched on...? (I've enabled it now).

Re: Var partition filling up quickly!

Thank you for your comments. I ran the Disk Usage Analyzer and my cache is also the main culprit at 570mb. If it's a 'cache', presumably I can trash it but I will do a little more research unless anyone has some additional advice. I've attached another screen print.

[SOLVED] Var partition filling up quickly!

Perhaps, somewhat foolishly for a Linux newbie, I opted to manually partition. Unfortunately it looks like the 1.5 gb that I assigned to my Var partition is not going to be enough. Is this something that I can fix relatively easily with a partition manager app? I'm worried that if I start using a pr...

Re: Adjusting thumbnail size when uploading files

Did a bit of digging and found this thread. There seems to be no obvious solution and I'm a bit surprised there hasn't been more debate to be honest. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=466295 I have to say, this seems like a serious limitation of nautilus / gnome to me. If one is doing a lot o...

Re: Adjusting thumbnail size when uploading files

Sorry - forgot to include that. Yes, nautilus on Gnome. I tried ctrl + and - with no luck.

Below is a screen-print of the view I'm getting currently :-

Adjusting thumbnail size when uploading files

This should hopefully be an easy one to answer: I just performed the simple task of uploading some jpg files as email attachments. Unfortunately when the 'Select file to upload' window opens, the preview size of the thumbnails is so small as to be barely visible. And there seems to be no way of chan...

Re: newly installed apps not showing up in the menu

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that gzip is a command line tool and it isn't an app that would show up in your menu. Kind of a long manpage: man gzip Also see the gzip home page: http://www.gzip.org/ Thanks for your help. As a newbie, gzip might be a little advanced for me.

Re: newly installed apps not showing up in the menu

For me, if a newly installed application is not showing up in the menu, most of the time I can simply log out and then log back in and it will be there. If you want to find where the files for a particular application are located it's really very easy to do. Open Synaptic, find the application, cli...

Re: newly installed apps not showing up in the menu

Hello all, this is my first ever post so please be gentle! I successfully managed to download Gzip via Synaptic. But as you probably guessed (because I'm posting on this thread), I can't find it anywhere in the menu. The terminal has confirmed its existence and location but I am unable to find it in...
