Re: Install Linux on a non-USB, non-DVD machine?

There's no reason to use Lubuntu if you would like a richer DE. You can install Mint from the network in a variety of ways. Server and network installations Ubuntu can be installed over a network or the Internet. Local Network - Booting the installer from a local server, using DHCP, TFTP, and PXE. I...

Re: Backup tool

Are you trying to backup your entire system? I think you're going about it the wrong way which is why you're freezing during the backup. A much better way is to use your Mint live CD-ROM and the dd command to clone your hard disk. Disk cloning is the process of making an image of a partition or an e...

Out of curiosity, why did you install Linux Mint 13 'Maya' instead of the much newer Linux Mint 17.1 'Rebbecca'?

Re: New Mint 17.1 Cinnamon install: opinions

Any system that shipped with Vista (or any Windows version post XP for that matter) is going to see significant performances gains with Linux, especially if one chooses a lighter desktop environment such as XFCE or MATE. The Linux kernel is designed for efficient handling of hardware, system resourc...

Re: Devuan (DevOne) Fork of Debian, systemd, and Linux Mint

Frankly, the entire systemd furor is a storm in a teacup waged by the l33t. Apparently some people seem to think that if systemd is implemented in a distro then Red Hat will swoop in and take over Linux. Ridiculous! Mint is a desktop OS aimed at users who likely aren't going to care about the nuts a...

Re: Kernels in Update manager

Frankly, it's stupid simple to just use the Liquorix kernel, which is updated frequently. Liquorix is a distro kernel replacement built using the best configuration and kernel sources for desktop, multimedia, and gaming workloads. Simply add the repository to your sources.list file, refresh the repo...

Re: So... there is no compiz for linux mint cinnamon?

I'm not sure why so many people claim Compiz is broken. I've been using Compiz since it debuted years ago and then Beryl and finally Compiz-fusion. While personal tastes vary, I find Compiz to offer something totally unique to the Linux desktop that makes Windows and Mac users alike swoon with envy....

Re: What are you most dissatisfied with in Linux Mint?

I recently switched back to Linux Mint after spending several years on Debian and then another few years on Sabayon because Mint shifted to LTS releases as its base. And I was anxious to get back to MATE and Compiz (I missed my fun, familiar desktop of yesteryear.) Any updates to specific software I...

Re: I wanna LEARN EVERYTHING about Linux! (SOLVED, kind of)

If you really want to learn all that there is to know about Linux than Mint isn't for you. It's easy and just works. (Which is great for those of us who already know a lot about Linux!) :D I would recommend something like Arch, or Gentoo to get your feet wet. Good luck!

Re: How do I do a clean install of linux mint?

If you want to do a clean install of Linux Mint, then it's a simple matter of reformatting your Linux partitions and starting over. Say you have half of your hard disk devoted to Windows and the other half divided up to support your Linux Mint partitions (usually '/', swap, and '/home'.) Simply re-n...

Re: Why would someone buy a MintBox 2 or a MintBox Mini

There are many reasons why someone might buy a computer with Mint pre-installed. For one, the mintboxes are inexpensive compact "appliances" that one simply attaches to a keyboard, mouse and monitor and is ready to go. For another, these devices, running Linux Mint, are free of bloatware and resista...

Re: Why does MATE look different in Mint?

The beauty of Linux DE's in general (including MATE) is that everything is highly customizable. You can have MATE look like traditional Gnome 2, Windows XP, Windows 7, Apple's Mac OS, XFCE or literally anything in between. Enjoy! :D

Running the latest kernel in Mint/Ubuntu is easy! Just use the Liquorix kernel which is currently at version 3.18.5 and available for Debian. It works splendedly in Mint/Ubuntu too, plus it's highly optimized for performance and efficiency. You can easily run it in Linux mint by doing the following....

Re: Plasma 5.2 ? on mint 17.1 KDE?

I agree with Hoser Rob. There aren't enough compelling reasons to upgrade to Plasma 5 yet to justify the myriad bugs and glitches that you are likely to encounter. Personally I would wait until the codebase stabilizes and Clem and the crew implement the new Plasma securely and in a more stable form.

I had this problem too and solved it with a little shell script. Open up Pluma and copy the following lines: Note, you only need --indirect-rendering if you have a Nvidia graphics card. This greatly improves Compiz performance on nvidia cards. #!/bin/bash sleep 15 killall marco killall compiz killal...
