Linux Friendly Laptops

I've read that intel chips are generally more linux-friendly than their amd counterparts; now I'm wondering how linux-friendly budget-brands like Lenovo & Acer tend to be...Dells can get expensive :) I've seen a few a few nice models at BB - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Lenovo+-+Laptop+/+Intel%26%231...

Toshiba / Mint Problem?

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5200, AMD 64 bit, 3 gig ram. I'm trying to do two things: 1) dual boot & 2) get it to recognize my home wireless. The first goal has been harder to achieve than I expected. In a vain search for a newish Linux that would install, I've tried more than a handful of dis...

Thanks for all the great input. I eventually installed IceCat & that allowed me to short circuit my lack of knowledge (and motivation:).

Re: Panel App Launch Bar

Ah, but therein lies the problem: the shortcut points to the older version of Fire Fox....that's why I'm trying to find the file that "sets" the target (/blah/blah/blah/firefox) for the app launchers. This was easy in Xfce, not so much in LXDE.

Re: Panel App Launch Bar

When I right-click on an empty application launcher, but again no "preferences." I do have the ability to click on settings, but that option only enables me to add app short-cuts to the launcher.

Re: Panel App Launch Bar

The lxde panel doesn't offer a "Preferences" option; worse still, I don't have the option of creating my own custom launcher. On the brightside, I did find the FF applet & it started... Any additional ideas?

Panel File Manager Icon

What is the panel File Manager icon (M 10)? At first glance it reminds me of an ear :( or a seashell (somewhat better).

You can find it out using this command:

Code: Select all

Edit: The most common fix for your problem is using a newer version of Linux.
Albert, thanks much for your input, I'll probably upgrade.

Re: Zebra stripes graphics bug?

Sounds like an issue between your graphics card and the linux kernel, not because you are triple booting. I had the same issue with Mint 9 Xfce on a machine at home, it would work fine for a while but then the bottom half of the screen would go black and the top half would have vertical black and w...

Re: LXDE desktop right-click menu?

Right-click, then select "Desktop Preferences". In the advanced tab there's an option to use the window manager's menu. Be warned that it's not configured by default and you'll either need to be proficient in modifying the Openbox menu file or you'll need to install obmenu to have a graphical inter...

Isadora Graphics Hiccup (solved - sort of)

Unfortunately both desktops (Gnome & XFCE) suffer from graphics hiccups every few minutes.

Machine specs
Dell 1545
Intel core 2 duo T6400 @ 2 ghz
2mb cache
Intel GM45 graphics

Update: I eventually installed Mint 10. So far it has worked w/o problems.
