Re: Disappearing task bar

Same problem here with 17.3Xfce. It's a new feature, think it may have started after a recent update? The whisker menu was substituted by the old 'Applications' menu (which works OK) but a new panel menu appeared and cannot be deleted although it can be emptied. Someone somewhere must have the answe...

Re: Cinnamon - random crashes (X-server)

This one isn't yours
Just trying to help - no need to be rude. Not the attitude of the Dutchmen I've met.
Has it occurred to you that there might be some commonality in these crashing observations?

Re: Cinnamon - random crashes (X-server)

consider a switch to the Xfce Not too sure about that. Rosa is the first (Mint) Xfce I've ever encountered that crashes regularly after 1-2hrs inactivity. Tried increasing memory, disabling screensaver, changing PSU, nothing seems to work and the crash is total ie requires hard reset. Any ideas ple...

Re: Intercepting the boot-up repair console.

Thanks, O.R. Sometimes use a Puppy liveCD for repairs & co because it's small and fast, but it's less effort to use the internal console if it's there! Yes, modern kit is too fast - can't always hit the F8 at the correct time...

Intercepting the boot-up repair console.

If there has been a bad shutdown or if I create one with the hard reset button, the next boot offers to enter the repair/check console. This is a very useful feature, but is there a keypress to force this option after a normal shutdown? Prefer not to modify GRUB as this would bring up the option for...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Xfce released!

Yes, it's very good indeed, but had endless problems trying to install 32bit version on a 32bit machine. See comments on "Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Xfce RC released!"

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Xfce RC released!

Sort of fixed it. The install was never completed (obvious from the above). Tried it in all modes on several 32bit machines, different memory sticks/sizes, different video cards - no go. In desperation fitted an IDE-SATA converter and installed on a 754 machine. Worked first time! Transferred hard d...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Xfce RC released!

Well, thanks for that very rapid reply, Pjotr. Maybe it's a different problem? The little circle displayed during installation never stops revolving and GParted only shows ~2.6Gb on sda1 (default wipe-install chosen). Trying to mount /sda1 gives "already mounted or /target busy" "according to mtab /...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Xfce RC released!

Yup, got the final. 32-bit liveDVD runs nicely, but same problem - installation doesn't seem to finalise. Shutdown for restart seems to run OK now but no bootloader has been installed. All files present on HD. Can GRUB be installed from another source? Which? How? or from liveDVD? This is not an are...

Re: Linux Mint 17.2 “Rafaela” Xfce RC released!

No problems with 64bit (like it), but installation of 32bit is weird. About 2/3 way through, drops back to (live) opening screen, cursor still rotating. Long delay, DVD starts up again - same screen. Stops. Another delay, process repeats - never gets to finish. Tried new d/l, re-write, etc. - no - c...

Re: Error: Invalid environment block

Well, I used the Boot Repair disc too; it claimed to fix GRUB, but the error message came back again. Fortunately, it always boots up successfully after pressing ' any key '. It's amazing that there have been so few responses and even more surprising that no-one has fixed this yet. It seems to apply...

Re: Error Question

Yes, I had a similar message after another update of LM14 Xfce(32) today, except it was a /var/lib file that seemed to go pear-shaped. I started in recovery mode several times until it hit the auto fsck @ 20 [which is quicker than using another liveCD]. startx provided a root log-in from where I res...

Re: Xfce 14 installer crashes at end (UFS related?)

There is a fault with the basic installer in Xfce 14 download which is (almost) corrected on the first (language selection) panel. It is necessary to either have a wired connection, an active wireless connection installed from the liveCD or have updated the liveCD online. It can be overlooked, but a...

Re: PAE Kernel

Thanks for the heads up, Vincent. I discovered that installation on a PAE board is all that is necessary. The HD can then be successfully(?) be transferred to a reasonably modern (post-~2000) non-PAE machine (but not, as you point out, any Pentium-M). So far it has worked on three boards as well as ...

PAE Kernel

Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment which aims to be fast and low on system resources... Cognisant of the above, one of the most curious decisions concerning the release of LM14/32bit has to be the restriction to PAE kernels; 64bit versions are no problem. I thought Clem lived in Ireland?! On...

WARNING : double back-up before latest Maya Xfce update . I see you guys are still struggling - sorry to hear that. Re: Recent update of Maya XFCE broke... something?

Thanks for your suggestion Matt. The root desktop I get from maintenace (should've said recovery mode!) doesn't seem to be the same as that from a regular start-up or su - /password. Running xfwm4 doesn't affect the primary install. I can see all my files intact in recovery mode but, probably by des...
