Re: Ghost item on the taskbar of Mint 12 KDE

That seems to be a KDE issue... I've noticed it in several distros. The "ghost item" goes away (for me at least) if you simply click on the main menu button. A minor annoyance, but not too serious. If anyone knows how to stop this happening at all, I'd love to hear it.

Re: No Sound with 64bit LM12 KDE

Usually opening your mixer and making sure the right channels are turned up/not muted solves this... post back if that doesn't fix it.

Re: Why so confusing?

i want to try MATE but the only way i see to do this is to download the gnome+mate dvd and burn it to a disc. I had all sorts of confusion going on when i tried to install it from the disc. So what i have installed is the 64 bit CD no codecs version....that installs with the mint4win file. Anyways,...

Re: Firefox won't install extensions

Sounds like it's a problem with the video download helper. I'd try removing that and see what happens, as I've never had problems installing add-ons in any linux version with any version of firefox (or chromium for that matter). I'm guessing that the download "helper" is somehow preventing...

Re: Why so confusing?

@Maynard: In linux you don't install software by clicking on links on websites... you use your package manager. Open Software Center or Software Manager or whatever name it's using on your machine and search there for chromium or whatever you want to install. That will automatically install it and a...

Re: Another Unity refugee seeking sanity

To the OP: I think your best bet would be either Mint 12 KDE, or an older version of Mint with gnome (11 or earlier). Any of these will do everything you hope for in terms of multiple desktops and you won't be subjected to any of the Unity/gnome-shell insanity. The older Mint gnome versions will act...

Re: Power Icon

Sorry... I misread your post and thought you were in KDE... I guess you mean xfce. If so, you need to get the xfxe4-battery-plugin. Search for it using Synaptic or do sudo apt-get install xfce-battery-plugin in a terminal. Once that's done you can right-click on the panel and under panel>add new ite...

Right-click on panel, unlock widgets (if locked), panel options, add widgets, battery monitor... drag it to where you want it.

To disable the messages, make sure the akonadi server is not being started. Open your ~/.config/akonadi/akonadiserverrc file and set StartServer=true to StartServer=false.

Re: Linux Mint 12 Lisa w/ KDE desktop problem

Sounds like a video driver issue to me. Look for "Additional Drivers" in the menu and try installing the proprietary driver for your hardware and see if that fixes it.

Re: Can't start x after installing nvidia drivers

Not sure if this will help, but sometimes nouveau gets embedded in your intrd, so that even after uninstalling it, it tries to load. Try update-initramfs -u and see what happens... maybe run nvidia-xconfig after that to generate a fresh xorg.conf.

Re: kde distro headaches....

Also not quite sure of what you seek, but for me almost any distro's KDE version is pretty great. I have Mint 12, Arch, openSUSE, Fedora, PCLinuxOS, Kororaa, Debian-testing, Aptosid, Sabayon, Chakra, Mageia, Mepis, Slackware, Kubuntu, Salix and Pardus installs... all working fine. The main differenc...

Re: linux mint kde 12 crashed after kernal update 3.2

How did you install the nvidia driver? The correct way is via the "additional drivers" thing in your control panel. If you installed via the .run file from nvidia, that may have caused the problem, though it may work if you run nvidia-xconfig. Try uninstalling it (NVIDIA.......run --uninst...

Re: Too many updates for a fresh release?

Ok... I remembered that I have a Kubuntu install on my laptop and copied the contents of the /var/cache/apt/archives from there to the same location on the Mint 12 KDE install. Reduced my download size to almost nothing! After playing with it for a short while, I really like Mint 12 KDE. I had to pl...

Re: No updates?

I'm not looking forward to UP4... perfectly happy with gnome 2. While I agree that LMDE is in many ways better than the 'buntu-based Mint, there are some disadvantages. Ever notice how much more polished and professional looking the fonts are in Mint/Ubuntu? And little things like the shut down/rest...

Re: Will KDE survive

KDE is in no danger whatsoever! Kubuntu will still exist even without the one paid developer they had until now. That said, Kubuntu has always had almost no bearing on KDE's health, as openSUSE provides most of the paid developer effort to the project. With Unity and gnome-shell proving to be rather...

That's one reason I like Fedora... the use of delta rpm's reduces the size of updates dramatically. openSUSE does this too. Perhaps someday apt will implement this feature...

claudecat...if you haven't already, i would suggest you try Cinnamon session on your Mint 12 installation...you might like that...when i first installed Mint 12 i was using MGSE but once Cinnamon became available i added it and it's become my favorite "default" session for Mint 12...each ...
