Re: Wine problems

I get this problem when I try to install programs from CD. Like vortex59 said, I make an ISO (unpack it with RAR) then run the exe from HDD.

Best partition cloning app?

I'm looking for a good Live Disk partition cloning application. I use CloneZilla and it works great, but I was wondering if there are other applications out there. I always clone entire partitions; never bother cloning files or operating systems because it doesn't always restore the way you want it.

Re: These two laptops work perfectly

Wow, and I thought HP had something against Linux because my Compaq nx9420 has been overheating on Linux since day one. Been trying to fix the problem for over a year now with no success (fans DON'T need cleaning; stop mocking me!!!). But of all the distros I've tried (Open SUSE, Debian, Mandrivan, ...

Can't access properties in Gnomenu

It's probably an easy one, but I'm a noob. I'm running on Linux Mint 8. Installed Gnomenu (it's a panel addon). Everything worked fine until I installed a buggy button for the "Menu" icon. Now I can't access Gnomenu properties. I completely uninstalled and reinstalling Gnomenu multiple times. Doesn'...

Any good sound themes?

I've only managed to find 2 sound themes. The package manager isn't very good at finding them (unless you know the exact name), so I was wondering if any of you know any good sound themes and where to find them. The only ones I've found through package manager are the Ubuntu, Ubuntu Studio (nice sta...

Re: Alternate ways to remove Grub?

After 2 days of tinkering we "did" try to install windows on the linux partition, maybe a couple dozen times, using different sizes and HD formats. Windows would simply tell us the partition wasn't setup to have windows on it (in the partition selection part of the installation process) and it would...

Alternate ways to remove Grub?

Are there alternate ways to remove Grub? I ask in case the booting from XP Installation CD method (activating recovery console by pressing 'R' in blue screen then typing "fixmbr") doesn't work. I'm going to a friend's house to remove Linux, and I don't want to format his entire disk. In his case he ...

Re: Can't mount external HD

It's a 320 GB external HD (one partition) with 40 GB free space left. It was initially a FAT32 drive and I changed it to NTFS once it already had files on it (using Partition Magic). Doing a “Check Disk” and trying to fix errors. Not really looking forward to formatting the whole thing... Ughh

Re: Need driver or app to calm down my CPU/Battery

Ya, I'm not even looking for ati/amd drivers, because I don't think that's the problem. It just so happens Catalyst has that battery option. I'm hoping there might be a package. I'm currently experimenting with whatever looks like it could help. Then when all else fails, I'll try another OS.

Need driver or app to calm down my CPU/Battery

Ok, it's related to ATI Radeon. I read up a bit on all the woes Radeon drivers and Catalysts are causing to Mint 8, but I have a peculiar problem and I'm curious if there's a alternate solution to this mess. I have a problem with Mint 8 that makes my laptop’s fan constantly run at max speed, even wh...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

I find many Linux purists quizzical in a funny kind of way. Most of the annoying stuff would be revolves if developers would finally come to terms with the fact that many Linux users aren't network admins . I often hear how new Linux users have to adapt to Linux when it's becoming more obvious with ...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

Been using Mint for 1 week, and I love it in some aspects, and hate it in others. Here's what I don't like. 1) Install files are rarely called something obvious, like Install, or Setup. It's often something cryptic. Since I still don't know what the exe equivalent in Linux is, I tend to rely on the ...
