Re: Partition options for dual boot/dual hard drives

Hi there, I'd like to install dual boot Windows XP and Mint Julia 64bit on my Asus K70AD. I only started learning about partitioning. I heard, that it is best, to install Windows first, then Linux. Though, I cannot install Windows, because it always complains about the partitioning and formatting. ...

Re: Partition options for dual boot/dual hard drives

Thanks for the reply Lanser, I assume when you say third party boot manager your not refering to grub? I guess I didnt realize there were any other boot managers besides grub or LILO. As far as putting the main OS on the best drive, I guess that does make the most sense. The software you mentioned ...

Re: Partition options for dual boot/dual hard drives

Hi anowis123. Based on using Linux for 95% of all my needs with the option of an occasional win XP boot, here are my personal prefs for disks and partitions. Only have one target disk connected during the install process. Use your fastest, best disk for the OS you will use most. Each disk has an OS ...

Re: Replacement Radeon Graphics Card

Interesting AlbertP. Agreed the driver could probably be retained but I am unclear on the low level boot process for X. If it probes the installed card for config info prior to loading, or if X uses the previous session config info. Either way, with four OS's on this machine ( XP, Mint10 Gnome, Mint...

Re: Replacement Radeon Graphics Card

Thanks for the feedback mads. Removing and re-installing the driver worked with only 3 sec of "screen panic" on the intial mint boot. This is a multi OS machine, so I had to pull the driver from each OS prior to the card replacement. The only other step I would suggest, would be to temporarily chang...

[solved] Replacement Radeon Graphics Card

Hi. Just looking for advice re upgrading graphics cards in Julia. Changing from Radeon 4xxx to Radeon 5xxx.
Will the proprietary FGLRX bind with the new card or will manual tweaking be required ? Modprobe ?
Or is it cleanest to re-install Julia ?

many thanks

Re: Can't log-in after install

Just ran up Xfce 64 RC 201104 on a test machine. Same issue. Had to re-install twice before I could get it to accept the log on pwd.
Got in on the 3rd install. Using same user name and pwd each time. bug in the installer ?

Re: Need a laptop hardware guru

I agree with your PD. Sounds like a thermal runaway issue on the CPU or GPU. It could either be HW or SW related. Before cracking the case open, I would suggest installing another HDD ( if you have a spare ) and installing a different OS. See if you get the same heat issues. If yes,, then look at th...

Re: Julia on Lenovo S10-3c - problem with webcam

Hi Anton. I have a Lenovo S10-3 ( older model ) and the web cam works OK under Julia 32bit and LMDE. Next time I boot the netbook, I'll check what hardware is showing. But it is possible that Lenovo have used a different camera in the 3C. Have you confirmed that the camera is enabled in the bios ?? ...

Re: [Solved] Grub problem: Grub Rescue

Just a quick thank you to Seeley for his efforts to help people with Grub !
Just broke Grub (again;-) on my multi boot test machine and his suggested quick "three step" approach restored Grub in 1 min.
Saved me a lot of time today ! Many thanks !!

Re: Julia doesn't recognize ext4 partition from Mint8

oakhilltop. You also might want to confirm the disk boot order set in the bios. I agree with seeley though, booting from a parted magic cd is a good way to see what is going on. Then set up the target partitions you want for your new install. "julia" will set up grub for multi boot if that is what y...

Re: Setting up an external monitor on a netbook

lumi I don't have a N210 , but I have installed Mint on many netbooks. My guess is that everything maybe working, but you will need to use either a key combination or a special function key to toggle the ext monitor on. There will be three modes. Netbook screen only, ext screen only and both. Check ...

Re: Laptop not working with Linux Mint 9 and Windows 7

St0newash. No idea if you have a faulty battery, but removing it for a few min is the cure for many laptop HW related problems. Laptops ( and many desktop motherboards ) use soft switching to store HW states or preferences but sometimes these get messed up due to a sequence of SW or User actions. Th...

Re: Problems with an eMachines em250 (Acer D250) and Mint 9

Sorry Jansonenglish. I have installed Mint 9 Gnome on two Acer EL1301's over the last couple of months, with no issues. Only comment is that I did remove all the existing partitions and format to ext 3 before running the new install. Some of the newer recovery functions on Acer and Lenovo machines p...

Re: Mint Menu Challenge

Many thanks for the reply remoulder. Recreating the menu, just recreated the same problem, so I am guessing I have a few corrupted config files. The quick work around was to create another user with the same permissions, then migrate any data and settings. Just have to be careful doing the clean up ...

Mint Menu Challenge ( resolved )

Got a strange one for the Mint community. Today my main stable Helena install's menu, "lost" the <all the applications> view. Running Gnome + Helena 8. Favorites is still running but if I toggle to all apps, all is blank. "Edit" Menu does not run. Alacarte under X does not run. No big deal, I create...
