Re: Mepis vs Mint Debian

I haven't tried Mepis since 8.0. Enough to know that I didn't care much for KDE, and it was slow to run on this old hand-me-down hardware. AntiX is Debian Testing rather than Debian Stable as Mepis is. When Mint 9 Xfce /Xubuntu 10.04 reaches end-of life, and if the new Xubu LTS is too much for this ...

Re: Why I love Linux Mint

I think the Update Manager in Mint is one of the best things about it for new users. It provides a "safety net" that most other distros totally lack with their all-or-nothing updaters.

Re: Best browser for Linux?

I really like Midori, but it crashes constantly on every distro I've tried it on except SalixOS (Slackware-based). My "default" internet suite is Seamonkey. Built and maintained by Mozilla from the remnants of the old Netscape suite, it does what Opera does (combined browser and e-mail client), only...

Re: Would LMDE be better using stable base rather than testi

Ubuntu makes Debian "available" and usable for us "ordinary, casual" desktop users. If Mint can do the same thing with Debian that Ubuntu has, but using Debian Stable , it would be just about the only distro to compete in the same arena as Mepis (KDE) and SalineOS (Xfce). IMO, only Mepis has come cl...

Abiword/Gnumeric , and Gnucash . Xournal for keeping written (yes, hand -written!) notes and annotating pdfs Seamonkey (Iceape) in place of Firefox and Thunderbird because it's alot lighter and faster and does almost all the same stuff (including extensions). Audacity for editing music (a choreogra...

Re: Linux Desktop On Par With Mac and Windows?

I have no first hand knowledge of this of course, but I just know how I would feel in their shoes: If I had spent years of hard work to develop a "friendly" Linux for the desktop that even grandparents and little kids could use without coaching, and shared it with the world - and then had my work be...

Re: The gap is closing between Mint and Ubuntu...

The gap is widening between Mint and Ubuntu, as Mint moves to a Debian base. I really think that the Ubuntu-based "flagship edition" of Mint will eventually be phased out as more and more Mint users adopt this arrogant "Ubuntu hatred." The natural outcome of Ubuntu hatred is to put as much distance ...

Wow. And I thought I was a fanboi! Nothing compared to you guys. I thought maybe I was getting cocky because I use Linux - and this thread serves as a picture of what I don't want to be - a zealot who holds most computer users in contempt because they don't use Linux. Aside from the argument that Li...

Re: Why not Ubuntu?

>Why not Ubuntu? Because its a garbage OS If that were true, Mint would have chosen it as a base from which to build. The Mint community is better as its not all egocentric teenagers who think they know something ... and act like Ubuntu is the best and the only Linux distro out there. I guess you d...

Re: Hello, and a tiny bug I can't post because of locked for

Hi Sara Ann, from another Floridian! One of the best things about Linux Mint (main edition) is that superb installer software. I don't know why it hasn't been adopted by more distros ( including the Debian-based Mint versions!), because it's effortless and simple enough for even me to use, lol. I've...

Re: Why not Ubuntu?

M'kay... this isn't supposed to be a "bash Ubuntu" thread, just a "why Linux Mint is better than it's parent distro" thread. Linux Mint 9 Xfce ships without that abominable curse called PulseAudio! While it's "parent," Xubuntu 10.04, switched to it after holding out for awhile. Xubu didn't jump on t...

In most forums this thread would have been closed after the second or third off-topix barb was posted. I think I'll be checking in here alot less often.

Re: What is the most userfriendly Linux distro ?

In Reply to: The "most intuitive" and "easiest" desktop for someone coming from Windows is undoubtedly KDE, as I have already explained elsewhere in the forum. By the way, this seems quite obvious. I tried both when I was new to Linux, coming from XP. I found KDE slow and k onfusing. All those appli...

Re: What is the most userfriendly Linux distro ?

Most intuitive IMO, and having the simplest interface that is easiest for folks who are used to Windows IMO are the Xfce distros. Best of the Xfce distros on my computer so far has been Xubuntu Lucid and Linux Mint 9 Xfce.

Re: Back to the Best (Linux Mint 9)

*raising hand* Me too! I much prefer the Ubuntu-LTS-based versions to the Debian-based ones, even though I'm sure that to many other Minters, saying so is blasphemy! IMO the Ubuntu-based ones are not only easier to install, set up, and configure, but better looking, better behaved, and easier to fi...

Well, it must be because I'm so silly that I use Linux! A smart kid would have bought a new 'puter by now, lol. Saving money and having fun ...
