Re: PCLinuxOS KDE 2011.6 is now available for download

... AND they despise ubuntu. IM SOLD. I wouldn't use any distro on the basis that it is known for their hatred or another distro. Xubuntu worked on my hardware. PCLOS (Xfce edition) did not work as well on the same hardware, so I used Xubuntu. But I don't despise PCLOS for not working as well on my...

Re: Is Linux Mint 11 buggy like Ubuntu 11.04?

Xubuntu 11.04 had two minor bugs (not show-stoppers by any stretch) when I tested it... but it was Alpha at the time!

Like every Linux distro there is.... a lot depends on the hardware!

I added no software drivers for my HP F-380. Just plugged it into a USB port and bingo. Done.

Re: Name of HP Scanner that works...please

HP Deskjet F-380 color scanner/printer/copier "All-in-one" worked flawlessly out of the box with Xubuntu and Linux Mint. There's even a HP help package in the repos that let me check ink levels and stuff.

Re: too many distros?

Not that it matters, but would agree that sticking to LTS versions of buntu seems like sound judgement. If I understand the process. Buntu LTS release are repackaged Debian latest stable release. While the in-betweens are rebranded Debian testing. Debian releases a latest stable every 2 yrs. Not a ...

Re: What is the difference between Debian, Fluxbox, XFCE, ..

Wow, I'm really glad I wrote that! And delighted that people have found it so helpful. Proof that even a stunted little autistic kid (me) can do something really good sometimes! I hope I get to do alot more of that kind of good as I learn more.

Humbled and grateful,

Re: My first Linux convert

The dance studio I belong to had an ancient old dinosaur that had Windows 98 on it for the kids to use between dance classes. When the owner talked about trashing it because it was so slow, I offered to speed it up, "but it'll wipe the drive, if that's okay," I said. "Better than tossing the whole d...

Re: too many distros?

I've read arguments about how newcomers to Linux are confused by all the choices, but I usually explain it like this: Linux is a kernel - the base code of all the different distros. They're all Linux "under the hood." Some of the popular distros aim for the one-size fits all approach, and they're lo...

Re: Why not Ubuntu?

For me it's a matter of hardware. It sounds like Exploder has found a distro that is perfectly compatible with his hardware, yay! I played around with the Xfce edition of PCLinuxOS (and they said Xubuntu was "bloated" - nothing compared to Phoenix! But it is an awesome little distro with a fantastic...

Re: Why not Ubuntu?

I really have mixed feelings about even saying that I prefer Ubuntu over Mint, especially here at these forums. I'm a long-time Mint user and a long-time Mint fan. I didn't start using Mint because of any dissatisfaction with Ubuntu; the fact that Mint was based on Ubuntu was probably a major attra...

Re: Canonical Alienates Their Major Asset

Forgive me for saying so, but I think some of y'all are proceeding from false assumptions. Ubuntu is the project of one man who has described his relationship to the project as "benevolent dictator for life." That doesn't sound like a community project, even though some of Ubuntu's web pages suggest...

Re: Special Section for LTS Isadora???

Is this a poll? Can we vote? :D I vote YES, a li'l sub-forum for folks who stick with the LTS versions would fit nicely in the same section where you find the other editions; KDE, Xfce, etc. When I finally get a new 'puter (instead of using borrowed Windows boxes when I can find internet access some...

Re: Mint Overtakes Ubuntu for #1 spot

There's another important reason. People often don't want to change if Ubuntu works for them. Bingo. The same applies to Windows and Mac. If it ain't broke and there's no compelling reason to change - especially to a new and unfamiliar system - they're not going to. And no amount of pressure from s...

Re: Which Debian-based OS is right for me?

Ubuntu is much easier to set up and configure than Debian is! Ubuntu has "tamed" Debian and brought Debian's power and awesomeness to "us ordinary folks." It's great, but that ease and simplicity comes at a cost. There's a loss of efficiency and speed (yet I never noticed any difference , even on my...

Re: Life on the Road

Wow. Back in the old hometown for the weekend, and it feels strange. Strange because my mom and grandma are acting almost as though they can't wait for us to leave again, like we interrupted something more important to them than seeing us again. Weird. And stranger still after I heard from a kid wh...

I love Mint 9 Xfce too, but I had a chance to play with the new Xubuntu just to see what the new Xfce was like, and it totally rocks! But Xubuntu was a little buggy (it was still Beta when I tried it out though, to be fair). I don't like Mint's default applications (I always change browsers, e-mail,...

Congratulations! I just got my high school diploma (and AA degree from the community college - dual-enrolled) totally without Windows and the Microsoft Office stuff they all said I "had to have.!" My poor old hand-me-down hardware could not have done the job. But Mint 9 Xfce gave my poor old lappy n...

Hi! My laptop bit the dust, finally. It was on life support anyway, and hardware was failing. The darn things are so integrated that if one part fails you have to replace the whole motherboard and you may as well buy a new 'puter! Today I'm using a borrowd 'puter (Windows 7 - very nice, actually). I...

Richyrich, thank you for the awesome Minty grad cap! I made it the new wallpaper on my laptop! Green is my favorite color, too. Optimism, npap?
