Re: Linux Mint Help Via Crouton (Can't Complete setup)

It' because cinnamon isn't supported as a desktop environment in crouton it seems. A shame as i'd like cinnamon too (or MATE).

run:

sh -e ~/Downloads/crouton -t list

in a shell run to see the available desktop environments.

SD Card totally dead, kind of.

Hiya. My Galaxy S4 (after reading and writing a lot of info to the SD card) has made the card unreadable now, it seems. A pity as some info is backed up of course but not the newer info. With the SC card in the slot noting is recognised but under fdisk I get: Disk /dev/sdb: 1073 MB, 1073741824 bytes...

Selling Win 7 Ultimate - Couldn't resist the Linux Mint ref.

Enjoy. I'd sooner lose money that put someone else through that crap. Thanks to Autodesk I had to use it.

Local Council rejects Open Source (MS Cheaper)

I put forward the many open source alternatives available to my local council. They understood, but cited it was too expensive - referencing this article: http://www.computing.co.uk/ctg/news/2341969/-each-time-we-look-at-open-source-microsoft-is-cheaper-says-local-government-cio It's an old article ...

Lenovo G575 is terrible (slow). Any ideas?

Hiya, I have Mint 17.1 on my gf's Lenovo G575 as Windows 7 was beyond a joke in terms of speed (started slow and got worse) but it's still slow. Every programme, double click to launch, wait, loads, not devastating but say 3 seconds lag. Specs are: -Computer- Processor : 2x AMD E-300 APU with Radeon...

Re: Recommendations for Single Core CPU Systems

Manjaro Linux with the XFCE desktop seems v lightweight etc, try that? I know it's not Mint/Ubuntu based but it might speed up a bit. Depends what you're doing I suppose.

Re: Releasing Free CD's on events

Likely easier to make small flyers and put them in the window/local noticeboard than distribute cd's? Most people will see a free cd and think "my pc already works" as they're unfamiliar with how much "better" it could be (and many don't care). Ignorance is bliss. I'd target a local coffee shop that...

Re: How do you promote Mint?

I promoted Linux and Mint by creating this document that I made available to some students that I teach Cad to. They are naturally inquisitive about Linux. It's part of a migration I think, the XP users mentioned above will slowly come on board when they see a (likely younger) family member using it...

Linux handout/ booklet for new users

I teach BIM and sometimes, during sketching classes I run MyPaint on Mint in class. Students are naturally inquisitive and ask about it, so I put together a document that talks them through the benefits and pitfall of Linux usage (with plenty of screenshots some my own some from online) now availabe...

Re: Adobe After Effects

Hmm, can I hell get Jahshaka to install, I've even tried a .deb conversion using alien.

Can someone give me an exact terminal input sequence to get this running in Mint 17 please?

Thanks

Re: [Chat] Still keep a Windows? Speak out your reason

Abiword should be more than enough for most users certainly although I'm using Writer and sometimes Trelby. I much prefer Gnumeric over Calc though. in fact I wish they'd just replace Calc with Gnumeric and have done with it.

Re: How Linux entered into your life!!!

1995 had a look at Linux at uni and it looked too primitive, call me shallow but eye candy meant something to me (still does) and this was using university computers running Windows 3.1. I've no idea which Linux flavour it was but I remembered being pleased there was an alternative that might one da...

Revit. Two machines dual booted with Win 7 thanks to Autodesk not budging one bit. I hate booting into that partition, slows me down, dull, insipid even.
