Re: OpenSSL patch for heartbleed

Hiya. I'm using Mint 14 Mate and I've tried: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get upgrade openssl but I'm still showing a 2012 openssl version. There's a walkthrough on youtube but I have no "official package repositories list" in the sources.list.d folder. There's a few files for ...

UK - IT Construction Industry overhaul - BIM - Devs Wanted?

Hiya, I'm soon doing an MSc at Northumbria Uni and I'm already a Revit/BIMSight/Ecotect/Navisworks etc user (and tutor). Industry snapshot: an already IT heavy industry (construction) is slowly migrating to the next level. The UK is ahead of some parts of the world with this but, quite behind many o...

I can't format this USB drive at all.

Hiya, I managed it in Windows, kind of, but in GParted and Disks I'm having no luck. This is a shot of the (jibberish) files on it and the error from the DIsks utility.

Thanks

Re: Underclock/ reduce processor speed etc

@dagon Thanks. It's a Dell Inspiron N5110 i7-2670QM@2.2Ghz with a 128Gb SSD and 4Gb RAM @perham That's a good point, good call there. All I can add is that the area to the left of the trackpad, where the internal copper strip/heat sink goes to the fan, it does get pretty hot sometimes (I know it's e...

Underclock/ reduce processor speed etc

My laptop seems to run rather warm and my battery doesn't last so long (it's possible I need a new battery I know). Is it sensible to "underclock" in such circumstances? It's a quad core i7 Dell Inspiron. The processor entry under System Informations shows the following. One of them looks "wrong"? T...

WPS Office - MS Office Clone

Has anybody tried this? It's a Chinese made clone and looks superb but I'm wary of software not in the repo's. http://www.ksosoft.com/ http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/03/wps-office-for-linux-looks-like-microsoft-office-but-isnt I appreciate this is a bit like saying "I'm not trying it until you tota...

Re: Linux Mint 16 "Petra" MATE released!

the lack of Wubi will put some potential users off What do you mean ? We can't intsall dual boot ? You can still dual boot that's fine, sorry for the confusion, you cannot however install Linux Mint "within Windows" like before. This was a sugar coated way of letting fledgling users install the OS ...

Re: Linux Mint 16 "Petra" MATE released!

Well done! I haven't updated yet (14) but will do at some point. I'm worried the lack of Wubi will put some potential users off (well it will let's face it) and understand the reasons why it was dropped. I hope it can also be fixed one day too as so many people fear repartitioning their hard drives ...

GParted slider select unavailable for resize.

Hiya, I have an external NTFS HDD that my PS3 won't recognise (it has to be FAT) and it has all of my music collection on it. As I am using a 128Gb SSD on this machine and the music is over 600Gb I can't dump it all on here, reformat the HDD, then dump it all back. However, the external HDD is 2Tb s...

Bim Surfer

Hi, I wondered if any other cad/bim people had used Bim Surfer? I'll look at it soon I think. The clips on the site look great, really slick, and it has potential (there's only really Tekla Bimsight as a rival (which is also wonderful software, especially with clash detection and notes etc)). Re: Installed mint 15 and have no grub

All's well, this is just a general related comment. Just installed Win 7 dual boot as I need Revit access and had to bite the bullet, gutted. Windows predictably didn't detect Linux install so I used the boot rescue method listed above from a Mint 15 live disk (even though Mint 14 is the one install...

Re: Remove extended partition gparted.

Many thanks Ill try that.

To be honest I've no idea what the 3Gb of data is on /sda6 as it shows a folder called "lost & found" but it's empty even with files not hidden.

I right clicked and deleted it but I get the attached warning. Ill try rebooting etc.

Many thanks for your response.

Remove extended partition gparted.

Sorry to disturb, I think I need to do this from a live disk. I ran sudo sfdisk -d /dev/sda and recieved: Warning: extended partition does not start at a cylinder boundary. DOS and Linux will interpret the contents differently. # partition table of /dev/sda unit: sectors /dev/sda1 : start= 2048, siz...

Re: Installed mint 15 and have no grub

I've just been tinkering with Linux MInt 14, Bodhi and Zorin 7 before I ended up "losing" grub. I ran the fully automated Boot Repair utility found here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair and my boot has been perfect since. It may help you too. I tried the fix suggested here: http://comm...

Re: GStarCAD not AutoCAD - has anybody used it?

Does anybody think the AutoDesk suite of programs will be cloud based in future (i.e. not platform dependent)? I admit I use Revit more and more these days (such is the shift to BIM, which I don't mind at all). Anyone used FreeCAD for BIM based objects? I know it mentions it on their site. Ill give ...

Cat command, quick recap

I'm combining hundreds of text files (phone memos in txt format) into one file. Many are only a handful of words long. I can do this easily enough with cat but there's no separator at all between the entries and it's a big mess, even using -n etc.

thanks
