Re: apt-get update keeps getting stuck

Go to software sources and disable any PPA's then try refreshing

If you don't have PPA's
Open synaptic and check and see if you have broken packages and try the upgrade from there

Re: How to verify a correct installation?

Thank you, that guide is very straightforward and easy to follow, but I do have a concern. Just to clarify, you have to use the windows emulator to watch most streaming content on the internet in linux mint? What if I want to watch shows on potentially questionable sites that may have malware on the...

Re: Ethernet cable stopped working, wireless is fine.

Do you have Windows on this machine?
If yes, does the wired work there?

Otherwise I's suggest it's just broken

Boot a Live session of Mint from a USB or DVD
Does the cable work?

Re: Ethernet cable stopped working, wireless is fine.

So the driver looks OK

Your cable tests OK on other computers, so it's not the cable or the router.

Is this eth0 device integrated or PCI? I'm guessing integrated

Given the cost of a PCI device or you may have one, sling one in and see. D-Link are always a safe bet

Do you have a very much modified list of sources using PPA's?

Code: Select all

ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d

Presumably you are talking in a web browser?

Re: System HDD is full?

It's likely to be some error log

Check hidden files in /home/username
eg: .xsession-errors

or in /var/log

Re: KDE Plamsa 5 - what's it like?

Everyone's opinion will differ.
For me, in openSUSE Leap 42.1 - I'd be reluctant to issue it out to customers and find myself preferring kde4
There is some way to go IMO before it's suitable - but what the heck, it's out there and that's that.
Stick with Mint 17 is my recommend

Re: Can't delete folders in File Systems

Right click in the window of the file manager and > open as root
navigate to the desired place and proceed at your leisure

However, the fact that you need help with this suggests you might actually not know what you are doing

Re: Broadcom drivers

bcwl is proprietary and taints the kernel as they say
but it is widely used

b43 is not proprietary but it may not work for some broadcom devices, where 'wl' will

Basically, if either works
It really doesn't matter IMO
