Re: How to display netspeed

The applet did not show up for me either on LM 17.1 Cin 64b. I did not see the "System Monitor" icon either mentioned in http://www.ubuntugeek.com/netspeed-traf ... gnome.html .

Did you reboot?

Re: How to upgrade to LM 17.1 Rebecca?

Don't forget to backup your data before you upgrade -- just in case.

I had a problem with my 17.1 install and had to recover all my data!

Re: Why so many fonts?

Thanks Flemur. When I checked my font folder, it said 968 items! Edit: there's some font programs that are supposed to help with this stuff, but they really suck. That is for sure. :( Edit2: you can delete a lot of those bogus fonts thru synaptic or apt-get, tho not all. I have done that before and ...

Re: How to upgrade to LM 17.1 Rebecca?

From http://blog.linuxmint.com/ it says If you want to upgrade from Linux Mint 17, please wait for a few days while we release a new version of the Update Manager to you. In the meantime, you do not need to download or to reinstall anything. We’ll make announcements next week when this is ready. I d...

Why so many fonts?

Why are there so many fonts in LM 17.1 Cin? The same was true with 17. I only use about a dozen or so. The are many non Roman language sets which don't apply to me. Which ones can I safely remove?

Re: Freezing .. ??

Maybe this will help -- go to "screen locker" in settings and uncheck the boxes and set the drop down menu to "never".

Re: Which Desktop To Use? Cinnamon vs KDE?

This is ultimately a matter of personal opinion, but I've tried Kde and didn't like it too much. Cinnamon is so much more intuitive for me.
Yep!

Re: Mint 17.1 release date?

@tdockery97 -- Thanks for all the info. "Native Mint desktop" sounds great to me!

@xenopeek -- I have not seen a release either, but it appeared from some comments made that they were getting close.
Those KDE people seem to keep up to date on their releases.

Re: Things I forgot over time...

Just unchecked some things in startup and turned off some services I did not need.
Can you be more specific?

There are 2 different programs available -- "Services Settings" and "Startup Applications Preferences" -- when doing a search in the menu bar.

Re: Things I forgot over time...

I still can not get over how light Mate is on resources! With some minor tweaking I have memory use down to 195 MB on startup, that is amazing to me for a full featured desktop environment!
What did you do?

Re: Things I forgot over time...

Thanks for the info and updates. Hope we get the new version! That's for sure. And, I *will* be disappointed if not. :( Maybe they chose to start the testing with what was available. I get the impression that Clem likes to see everything work on a regular schedule. In this case, every 6 months is th...

Re: Things I forgot over time...

it runs much better with Mate! Whenever I have compared the same version of a distro with Mate and Xfce, I really could not tell much difference in speed and/or quickness. I had looked at the Ubuntu Mate Edition but Mint Mate just seemed more polished to me. That is the same impression that I got. ...

Re: Things I forgot over time...

I used to think that Mate might not be around long but I was dead wrong! If I had to bet, I think Mate will last longer than Xfce. This is based on the amount of development each is getting at this time. And, now that Ubuntu has a Mate version it looks even better. BTW, my test drive of 14.10 using...
