Re: Debian XFCE4

My experience with Debian Xfce is that it is faster than Xubuntu and Mint Xfce, but it lacks some of the functionality I'm used to. I'm afraid that by the time everything is added to make it Mint, it may not be much better than the current Mint Xfce. Philip Newborough said about the Crunchbang move ...

Re: Linux Mint XFCE CE - AMD64 Compatibility

I rarely see my computer use anything close to 2GB. I use it for browsing, writing, very light gaming, and light programing. So I see no reason to buy more memory, even if it is not so expansive. The 64 bit version seems to be working fine from a live CD, so I guess I can install it even if there is...

Re: Linux Mint XFCE CE - AMD64 Compatibility

merlwiz, I've never tried 64-bit OS. My computer CPU is Intel Pentium Dual-core E5200 and I have 2GB memory. do you think I'll gain anything by moving to the new 64 bit version of Linux Mint Xfce?

Re: Old system, best Live-CD

I don't think that Xfce is the most likely answer to your problem. My experience is that Gnome can work with 192MB, even if it is very slow due to excessive use of swap. the fact that gnome did not work suggests that your friend's computer might have less than 192MB, and in this case there is no gua...

Re: Xfce 9 Isadora development

My install of Mint Xfce 8 is still fresh and new. Although it was easy and fast to install, it will take at least another month before I'm ready to install all over again... Merlwiz, I have a question. Xfce 4.6.2 was out a few days ago, but I guess it is not yet in the Ubuntu repositories. Even when...

Re: Replacing GIMP

Pinta does look like a good app for the general user. But I must say that there's nothing wrong with GIMP. A few years ago I had to use Paint Shop for my job. When I started to use Linux I found that the differences between Paint Shop and GIMP are minor. I'm not sure why people don't like the floati...

Re: XFCE or LDXE

I like Xfce. Started to use it a few years ago when I had an old computer - Pentium 1.8 GHz with 512 MB memory. It could handle Gnome, but it felt faster with Xfce. Since then I've been switching back and forth between Gnome and Xfce, but even with a new computer I find that things are faster in Xfc...

Re: Mint 8 Helena Freezes help needed.

I've done that and all that is running, rest is sleeping, is Gnome-system-moniter (88%) and it froze after about 3 minutes. Previously it froze shortly after I opened the graphics (Gimp?) software to check it out but didn't get much chance to do so and all other times when using firefox. 88% cpu fo...

Re: Mint 8 Helena Freezes help needed.

Badger Tangerine, the first step is to understand what causes the freeze. start the System Monitor, and go the Processes tab. Try to leave it for a while, and see if one of the programs is taking a lot of system resources.

Re: how can I play an internet playlist from mplayer GUI?

dhdurgee, I downloaded the link you gave (right click, and "save as") then I dragged the WABCAMAAC.pls file into Gnome Player, and after a few seconds of caching I could listen to the stream. you can also look at the playlist in Gnome Mplayer by pressing F9 or selecting Playlist in the View menu.

Re: How to install Granola on Linux Mint 8 "Helena"

Actually, if you run Mint 8 Main Edition or XFCE, you have a panel applet that will do the same thing. In Main Edition, install CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor. In XFCE, install Governor Plugin. Both can be used to regulate the CPU clock frequency which is what Granola does to conserve energy. In KDE...

Re: Upadte fail

well, I solved the problem. Restarted the computer with the Linux Mint LiveCD, copied the /etc/apt/sources.list to a usb drive, went back to the installed Mint, and copied the file over (as administrator). Now everything is fine. I don't know what started the problem, but as long as it is fixed I'm ...

Fix Thunderbird 3 bug - asking master password twice

Mint 8 had Thunderbird 2 and Lightning installed as a default. I presume that this is going to be the case with Mint 9, probably with Thunderbird 3. Unfortunately people who tried the combination Thunderbird 3 + Lightning have found a bug that Mint should try to avoid. When you open Thunderbird you ...

Re: Aptitude & Synaptic

I'm not at all an expert, but here is what I understand: The problem with mixing apt-get and aptitude is that aptitude does not know what apt installed. as a result aptitude loses its ability to auto remove packages that are no longer needed as dependencies. Synaptic is just a GUI for apt, so In tha...

Re: How to install Granola on Linux Mint 8 "Helena"

Granola is a new name, it used to be called MicroMiser. I first read about it in the the open sourcerer blog , but I see that it was also reviewed in the Ubuntu Geek blog . There is also some positive discussion in the Ubuntu forums . None of these dissociations are based on solid evidence, so we ne...

Re: Photos and Mint 8 Solved

I apologize for not being clear enough. Nautilus is the file browser of Linux Mint (at least in the main edition). It sounds to me that your computer is having difficulties reading the external hard drive. It may be due to a bad connection, or wrong system configuration, both can be fixed. But it ca...
