Re: The way I dual boot using a desktop

Been using this method for years (only I don't remove sda whenever I monkey with new linux installations on sdb). Pressing ESC gives me my boot menu and I'm able to select between the two hard drives. sda contains Winderz and sdb has the 4 distro's I have installed. The only time I have issues is wh...

Re: Boot failures in 13 persist in 17

It's entirely possible that the graphics chipset on the notebook is going bad. I had a Toshiba that had a similar chipset (x1250 series) and was giving plenty of warning similar to what you're experiencing before it finally gave up the ghost and just flat failed.

Re: dual boot linux and xp with linix mint o separte hard dr

I, too, dual boot my machines. sda has Windows and sdb has several different Linux flavors. I generally leave sda alone and let grub handle sdb. If I want to boot into Linux on startup, I press ESC on my notebook to get a boot menu which allows me to select the drive I wish to boot to.

Re: dual boot n00b question: grub

I have two hard drives in my notebook. /dev/sda is my Windows drive and /dev/sdb is my Linux drive. I have several Linux distributions on sdb as well. When I installed Mint, I selected the partitions on /dev/sdb that I wanted to use, and then told the installer to install Grub to sdb. This leaves th...

Re: Sound stopped working

I had the same "Dummy Output" problem as you mention in LM RC 15 Cinnamon. This can be solved by adding a kernel parameter to the GRUB configuration as mentioned in this post: http://www.mysamplecode.com/2012/05/no-soundcards-found-linux-mint-12.html I guess this should be a bug because according t...

Re: Can I install win7/xp without losing mint and all my dat

When you install Windows, it wants the MBR and tends to overwrite any Linux boot info. There are a few ways around it, you'll just need to decide which is best for you. Here is one way:

Re: Questions for IT professionals and network guys...

Level 1, maybe. Level 2 usually entails a lot more of the nuts and bolts, under the hood type of thing. This is where you start getting into routing, packet shaping, and general networking. You should know what's entailed for a certified Cat 5 installation, as well as basic security practices.

Hell, how do you think WE get the answers that stump us? It doesn't matter what you know, there will always be an issue that pops up that will make you sit up and go HUH?!!!!. Someone else has most likely gone through it, and hopefully, you can find it via Google. No shame in looking for the a...

Re: fat32 vs ntfs

There's also much more wasted space with FAT32 in that files are written to 32K blocks rather than the 4K blocks in NTFS. I personally would go with NTFS. Less wasted space and I've noticed absolutely no speed difference between the two file system types on my system. And since NTFS-3g is pretty muc...

When you get to the section in the installer that deals with the partitions, select "Advanced". You should then be able to select your external drive and set up the partitions on it.

Did you check the MD5 sum on the ISO when you downloaded it? Have you attempted to burn the ISO at a slower burn speed?
