I think thou readeth too much into what's being said.
Vector Linux has always been Slackware based, and will continue to be so. It never was a "Slackware" distribution.

Re: what is 'address in terminal'
The address is used when using ssh to log into another machine. For example, let's say I need to do some server work as root, so I'll log into the machine by typing:
ssh root@machine_name.domain.com
ssh root@machine_name.domain.com

Re: ntpd lagging some 4...5 min behind true time
I think this is nothing more than a simple port issue. Ensure port 123 is open on your router and firewall. That's it.

Have you attempted to mount the device before using it?

Welp... That clinches it for me as far as Gnome is concerned. Never again shall it touch any of my machines.

Re: VAIO CS laptop touch control support
Hard to say. I know in Mint, the controls on my Toshiba notebook are spotty at best. Definitely doesn't work in Gnome, somewhat works with Mint KDE. However, the controls work perfectly with my primary distro (Vector Linux).

Did one better. Asked in the VL forums. Hopefully Vector will answer when he sees it.

Re: Slow Internet In Mint 8
Actually, you can. ;) In a terminal, type the following: gksudo nautilus /usr/share/pixmaps/wicd That's where all the wicd icons are located. Since they're under a root protected directory, you'll need root privileges to change the contents of this folder. Make a backup of the existing icons here j...

Heh... I used the Jumpstart programs with my kids, too. Although they're all of an age now where they'd look at me really funny if I pulled it up for them now.
SOHO 6 RC1 does come with some educational software on it. I haven't checked it out, tho, so I'm not sure what age range it's geared for.

Re: What's your favorite Audio Player for KDE?
My notebook controls work very well with Amarok in KDE (another distro, tho). Don't need a mini-player on the screen.

Mint GRUB shows the menu entry as Slackware, not VL. Do you see that on your menu?

Re: SalixOS
Biker, does Vector still optimize the system on first boot? I remember installing Vector Linux on and old PIII a couple of years ago, no other distro would run on that machine. Vector optimized the system on first boot, it took a while but the system was blazing fast when it finished. I remember tr...

That's the standard icon for wicd and as far as I know, you can't change it.

Re: SalixOS
I've been using Vector Linux for years and it still remains my primary distro. It has come a very long way from the early days and as far as I know, there are no plans to get away from the "Slack" roots. I'm currently testing the RC for SOHO 6, and it's a very, very nice setup. Yes, it's K...

Same answer applies. You don't. K3B is what you would use to burn/rip CD/DVDs.

Re: Making gmail my default emailer?

Re: can non root administrator install software?
If a user is created with root permissions (not recommended), then yes, that user can install programs without inputing the root password. However, logging on with root permissions is not recommended at all and highly discouraged.

Don't think so. I've never seen anything that allowed you to do that using a "mailto:" link.

Re: Making gmail my default emailer?
Set your gmail account to use POP3, and then set Thunderbird to use that POP3 account.
