Re: Installing Mint 8 on a dvd

I, too, am out of CDs but am in possession of a rather large spindle of DVDs. Been burning ISOs to DVDs using K3B for ages now. :D

Which is one of the infuriating things about Ubuntu/Mint/et. al.

The full blown version of Amarok has an equalizer.

So does Amarok. ;)

I can drag from Amarok and drop it into K3B.

I was in the IT biz for over 30 years. I finally got fed up and changed careers. Now I drive a semi and I couldn't be happier!

You don't. In KDE, K3B is the burner of choice.

Re: login screen goes away - sometimes

On an initial boot (especially if the notebook has been off for some time) I wouldn't expect a heat issue to crop up so fast. Although, over time, heat issues will cause component failure. When was the last time you blew the dust bunnies out of the notebook?

Re: WHY WHY WHY?

I was in the IT biz for over 30 years. I couldn't come close to giving an actual number of times I've installed operating systems (DOS, Windows, Linux, and others). In my experience, installing Windows has been much easier than installing other OSs, and with fewer issues.

Re: WHY WHY WHY?

It would be interesting to see, that if, a new computer did not come with a Windows OS pre-installed ... and a new buyer was given a choice of which OS they wanted. And buying a new computer had always been this way. Which OS platform would they chosen, if they we're given choice since the beginnin...

Re: WHY WHY WHY?

Please.... Regardless of the OS used, Linux is not the be all and end all of operating systems. The fanatical rhetoric by some regarding Linux really should be toned down. This isn't a case of whether Linux is better than Windows, but rather what OS works for the person sitting in front of the keybo...

Re: WHY WHY WHY?

WIndows 7 is a good OS. I've been running it since RC, and I find it a very good stable platform. It uses less overhead than Vista did, and works very well on my bargain basement Toshiba notebook.

Re: WHY WHY WHY?

Windows 7 is a great OS. I find myself booted into it on my laptop more and more, especially when I am on the road as I am now. I am sitting in a Hampton Inn in Oakridge TN, on my way to Ashville NC. I have no problems networking to wireless and Windows does everything I need. Is it "better" than M...

Re: Networking a Mint PC to Windows PCs?

I did a forum search but came up with nothing. Anyone know how I can share folders between my Mint laptop and my three Windows 7 laptops? Mint can see that there's a Windows wireless network present, but when I click on it I get the following error: Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share...

Ahhh. Interesting. Haven't run across that one yet. On my notebook, all the distro's go on an external USB drive and the internal hard drive is dedicated to Win 7.

Re: Installation Partition Issue

How old is the computer? Sounds like a LBA (Large Block Address) issue. Early BIOS versions couldn't read large hard drives properly.

Most don't know that you can also send SMS via your email client. Usually it's in the form of: 1234567890@sms.att.net or something similar.

You'll want to specify the partition manually.

You're selecting the third option where you specify the location rather than allowing the distro to decide?

Re: IF I dual boot widows and later i want to upgrade to min

Barring any really major changes, one should be able to keep /home if it's on another partition and just overwrite root.
