Re: WHY WHY WHY?

Same can be said for Linux. I don't know how many times I've borked an installation by installing something I really shouldn't have.

Re: System has suddenly started locking up frequently

If you can determine the manufacturer of the drive, check their website to see if they have any low level diagnostic tools that you can run against the drive. It should give you a better indication of what's going on.

Re: System has suddenly started locking up frequently

Looks like you may have a hard drive that's thinking of heading south. It appears you're getting sector errors.

Re: WHY WHY WHY?

**shrug** I've had Windows 7 on this notebook for over a year now, and it's just as fast as it was on day one. Of course, I don't download every single program I run across, either. Boot up rivals that of all the Linux distros I have installed as well. You just need to educate yourself on how to kee...

Same way you installed the current version. Just select the partition that has the mint installation and write over it.

Re: WHY WHY WHY?

Windows, like any other OS, is just an operating system that one should learn. It doesn't matter if it's Linux, OS X, or Windows, one should have a basic understanding of what's going on under the hood in order to use it properly. What amuses me are the Linux Fanatics who have "seen the light" and t...

Re: Linux Mint Arch Edition (unofficial)

I find this to be very important considering how Ubuntu patches application to remove or add certain features or functionalities to better fit within its own distribution, messing up distributions that are only coincidentally based on Ubuntu. For example, Ubuntu is patching programs to remove the "...

Re: Fluxbox and Google Chrome

I run a discussion forum and I've discovered that Chrome can sometimes trip the syn flood protection not only on the server, but also on local routers, effectively shutting down an entire home network. While Chrome is a nice concept on paper, it has a long way to go before I'd consider it as a prima...

Re: What's up with Medibuntu?

You put it in your /etc/hosts file.

It appears that Medibuntu is having DNS issues and the hosts file entry tells your system where it should look (via IP address) for the repository.

KeyRing on Wireless startup [SOLVED]

Is there a way to automatically tell the system to just start the wireless networking without the Key Ring popping up and asking for a password? Edit -- Never mind.. Finally found it via Google searching rather than forum search. Link is here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90...

Could it be hardware related? Sticky "Enter" key perhaps?

Re: Need help formatting drive to NTFS

Most likely doesn't like the MBR. Try this...

Take your Vista installation CD and boot to recovery mode. Then run bootrec.exe to overwrite the MBR. You should then be able to format the drive.

Re: Need help formatting drive to NTFS

Ummm, isn't there a format option on the Vista installation CD? There should be an option to specify the location of the installation and then format prior to the files being written to the hard drive.

There are quite a few. Wink and GTK-Recordmydesktop are two that immediately spring to mind. Openshot is a decent video editor as well.

Re: Fix For Boot/Install Probs w/ Live DVD/USB Mint8KDE

Hmmmm. Still had an installer crash during the installation. The aggravating part about it all was when I clicked on the link to report the issue, I got logged out, effectively wiping out the logs that would have been needed to report the issue. The crash happens after writing GRUB, so I'm not sure ...

Re: Fix For Boot/Install Probs w/ Live DVD/USB Mint8KDE

I'm running a Toshiba Satellite and ran into this issue. Booting in compatibility mode allows me to boot the CD. Installation fails towards the end, tho. Suspect it may have been a faulty burn, so burned the ISO again and am about to reattempt the installation. Notebook specs: Processor AMD Turion(t...
