Re: Would Microsoft fail if they eliminated piracy? “network

I do not seriously believe it is a possibility anyway, it really does not make sense. I was just using it as an example to show that businesses are going to have to come up with other solutions if they want to bypass this problem. We both know that the world will only get worse and there will be a ...

If you go to Wikipedia you can get a free 15 education of the logical fallacies.....it would do wonders for your debating skills, though as a side effect you might notice how much of Fox news is based on them  1. I wouldn't use Wikipedia as an "authoritative" source. 2. Perhaps you should read...

Re: Why piracy isnt theft

2. The US legal system does not consider copyright violation to be "theft". Look up the laws for theft. Look up the laws for copyright violation. You will see that they are not prosecuted under the same codes. If you pirate a $20 album you will NOT be charged with petty theft. You will be charged w...

Incorrect, he lost my potential sale. There is absolutely no way to prove if I would have bought it were it not available for free. You can split hairs all day long, but in the end, if you steal something that is not normally provided for "free", it is a lost sale. It doesn't matter if you had no i...

Let it finish checking the disk (yes, it can take a long time especially if there are errors). Sounds as if you may have a corrupted file system.

Re: Open Office 3.2 "Buggy"?

It's not the distro, but rather how the program was packaged for the distro. When you downloaded the debian version, was it from OpenOffice.org or from the debian repo?

Re: Isadora fails to use wifi

Your system is seeing the WiFi card, and it does appear to be communicating with your computer. Are you attempting to connect with the Cat5 cable removed from the computer? You can't do both at the same time. Suggestion.. Shut the computer down, unplug the Cat5 cable, ensure the WiFi card is turned ...

Re: A Radical New Direction for Mint

First of all, you need to realize that the developers don't work on Mint for a living. They're volunteers and donate their time. Add to this that many have families and primary jobs, it's a wonder that we get timely releases! Dedicating a team to do specific things sounds great on paper, but again, ...

Re: Number of Linux Mint downloads (and other OSes)

Can't be done. Seriously. You have folks seeding the ISOs via Torrent, you have multiple sites offering the ISOs for direct download, and this doesn't even count the various publications that may provide a CD/DVD of a distribution. There are far too many ways of obtaining a copy of a particular dist...

Re: Firestarter - curious entries found

The plot thickens.. a scan of the networked vista box has come up clean. On a fresh reinstall of LM9 i now have action on ports 6969 (Gatecrasher), 54321 (Back Orifice) and 50505 (Sockets de trois). When these ports are added to the block list, the corresponding name, as above, shows up automatical...

Re: Why piracy isnt theft

I'm not saying it's perfectly legal to fileshare, but many people turn a blind eye to it believing no one is losing out, with that section of society unable to pay for the data in the first place. One day they may get out of their trap and start paying. Till then, well it's a lot more than you thin...

There are other considerations as well, such as FTP, and a few other items that would tend to weaken the security of your desktop machine. While it's not common for desktop machines to be "rooted", it does happen. A lot of individuals tend to have a false sense of security when it comes to Linux. No...
