Re: The Journey of a New Linux User

I love the references to "uncooked chicken". :) Chicka has truly professional writing skills, and a delightful way of anticipating and smoothing troubled waters. It would be great if she would contribute to the general scape of Linux commentary. She would rise to the top quickly, and in the process ...

Re: How Sick Is This -- MS Attorneys Earning Their Paychecks

None of this discussion answers the basic question. Did the Android developers use Microsoft intellectual property without license and without permission? If so, they have to pay. If so, Microsoft is not screwing anybody. If so, somebody was screwing with Microsoft, and that is not smart. Open sourc...

Re: Linux Mint 11 release Date

For what it's worth, I posted my take on Linux Mint 11 / Gnome 2.32 at my site for any that are interested. http://www.ainer.org/news/linux-mint-11-katya-preview-and-testing-version-released Cheers! ;) I read your article, and agree with you. It's not Mint's mission to join the fray of presenting n...

Re: Warning Statin Drug Use!

I experienced the exact same thing when put on Lipitor, a statin. I too am a bicycle rider, and it wrecked my leg muscles. I couldn't even climb the stairs in my house. My doctor switched me to Zetia, and the problems are not so severe. I'm hoping to find a satisfactory diet and/or herbal solution.

Re: Ubuntu 11.04 Released

I've never had a good experience with Ubuntu, but I'm always willing to give it a try, especially if there's a big change such as Unity. Installation went fine but I would say Unity freezes nine times out of ten right after login on my computer. Found a lot of results for "Unity freezes" on google,...

Re: Ubuntu 11.04 Released

I don't get Unity - All of us posting here know far more about Linux than most people who use computers, but have never used Linux. Unity was not designed for us to "get", it was designed for other people, the 98% of computer users that do not now use Linux. Those people don't "get" how us geeks kn...

Re: Wishlists: Features for a Non-Unity/Non-Gnome-Shell Desk

. . . In short, my grumbling about Gnome Shell and Unity isn't about how they look or work in general, it's about the things they've abolished in the name of "simplicity." Those "things" are not being abolished (or deeply hidden) for you. You can find them, or select the distro that offers them. Th...

Re: Wishlists: Features for a Non-Unity/Non-Gnome-Shell Desk

Something to keep in mind when thinking about the future of Mint or any other Linux OS: Do you cater to the desires of the 2% (a generous number from all accounts) of dedicated Linux desktop users, or to the 98% of users of Windows and Macs who find Linux difficult or confusing or not compelling? Cl...

Re: Do you really want an iPhone?

I don't understand the commotion. A 15-year-old brick phone can be tracked in the exact same way. Apple is not doing anything new. There is a huge difference. Your 15 year old brick can only be tracked in real time via cell towers. Once it moves on, it does not leave a trail. If the cell phone comp...

Re: Back Up to the Mint Cloud

Spideroak is another very good offsite storage/sharing facility. I just think their paid services and general speed and service delivery are a bit better than Dropbox. I run it on all my versions of Mint. https://spideroak.com/download/ They all have free accounts you can sign up to and try out. Hi...

Re: Natty 11.04beta2 - MUCH better than beta1!

Update to my previous post. I bought a $38 Nvidia card (EVGA GeForce 8400 GS) for my aging Asus homebrew desktop (replaces built-in Nvidia 6150 video), and Unity now runs fine on it. Reinstalled, and downloaded the 292 updates that were available for Beta2 today! I did have one huge problem with 11....

Re: Back Up to the Mint Cloud

I use Ubuntu One in Mint and Windows, no problem. Also, Dropbox is a similar cloud service, and can be installed in Windows or Linux. In addition to backup, both services work quite well for making data files seamlessly available on multiple computers. Just point the program to the appropriate file ...

Re: Waiting for forums.linuxmint.com...

I am also experiencing the same issue intermittently. It only happens with Mint, and not the other Linux forums (and other forums) I visit. There has to be a reason, and it is not being addressed successfully. It is better than it was before the server switch, but there is plenty of room for improve...

Re: Do you really want an iPhone?

The point of the concern was that the data in great detail was stored on the phone, unencrypted, for anyone to retrieve. It could be used by a stalker to determine daily habits. Anyway, the Wall Street Journal has now picked up on this privacy issue, and it is not going away. It also involves Google...

Do you really want an iPhone?

This is disturbing . . .

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/04/20 ... _tracking/

Certainly Apple should have at least warned customers that their new toy tracks their every move.

I wonder if the Android phones also do this?

Re: Oracle Frees OpenOffice

Ah yes, from Sun, to Oracle, then to IBM, with the sniff of freedom in the middle as a foundation, it can't fail. Don't you just love frying pans? Maybe the brand and the code created since will go back, but I doubt the freedom protected by the foundation will. Time will tell. "Free as the wind" bu...
