Re: Always a Newbie

Where downloaded files go to is determined by Firefox which puts them into a folder called "Downloads" by default (please note the capital D in the file name, Linux commands are case sensitive). If you want to change that, open Firefox, go to Edit, Preferences, General and change the "Save files to...

Always a Newbie

I will always be a newbie because I can never get this system running long enough to learn it. I just tried downloading a .sh file that is supposed to install a program I want to use. BUT if I search for the downloaded file it tells me it is at home/ jim/downloads but when I go to home/jim/downloads...

I have no idea what "Oli" is. It is a folder that has intercepted all my personal folders and wont let go. My home folder is "Jim" then under that folder there should be folders called "pictures", "videos", "tools" etc etc BUT some how a folder with the name "Oli" has gotten between them so the tree...

SOLVED Mint 8 and Mint 11 dual boot.

Finally got it. I have two HDs and there was an /etc/default/grub file on each of them. I was modifying the wrong one. Once I looked at the other disk and found the "unmodified" file I knew what the problem was. It is now booting as I wanted it to.

Re: Mint 8 and Mint 11 dual boot.

Which are you running right now? Is it Grub2 or did you install Grub Legacy over it? Is there a way I can tell??? I did a clean install of Mint 11 from an ISO CD and its what ever came off the CD. I think, I did do a grub install from the "software manager" on my attempts to get this job done, but ...

Re: Mint 8 and Mint 11 dual boot.

It looked ok until the last line. Yes, there was a GRUB_DEFAULT=0 Yes, I edited it to "=4" then I used file, save then I used <sudo upgrade-grub> which gave the result "sudo upgrade-grub : command mot found" But I rebooted ANYWAY, but there was no change. I went back and looked at grub and the line ...

Re: Mint 8 and Mint 11 dual boot.

As you suggested, I tried Startup Manager....3 times....Each time I set the default, closed the program and re booted only to find the menu unchanged and still booting from the top.

<SOLVED> Mint 8 and Mint 11 dual boot.

The Grub menu that comes up at boot gives me two different Mint options, on two different HDs. This is what I intended. BUT, the top line, the default line, is not the one I want to be "default". I used to know how to go into terminal and modify the correct files to fix this...but the old methods do...

I have Mint 11 on one drive and Mint 8 on the other drive. The boot menu comes up such that the default boot, if I am not there, will be on the drive with Mint 8. I want to re arrange the menu so that Mint 11 is the default boot. How do I do this?

no root file system is defined

I like Linux, but its reputation as an operating system for geeks is well founded. I am a computer guru by many accounts having started with the IBM 7070 in 1960. I made my living with computers and once programmed in 12 languages. BUT........Mint is my nemesis. I cant remember which version I start...
