Old user with Newby question

This may be one of those "stupid" questions. I have been using mint since Helena and now have Katia installed. I have a second HD for backup that I created before upgrading to Katia I cannot access the files on the second drive because I dont have the "permissions necessary" and also because they ar...

Re: nVidia Graphics Card - Increase/Update Max Resolution

I tried Mint 8 and found that it configures the monitor at high resolution and with a refresh rate of 65hz. But when I try Mint 11 it will only give me a refresh rate of 51hz so THAT seems to be the problem.

I think I will go back to Mint 8 since it works.

Re: Get your nvidia card to have the right vertical refresh

Doesnt workk for me either on Mint 11 1st, there is no "cancel" box to check on the display that pops up when I enter xvidtune in the terminal. 2nd I dont know how to get into xorg.conf to make the changes. My terminal works fine under Mint 8 and I would revert to 8 except that I am afraid if I do I...

Re: nVidia Graphics Card - Increase/Update Max Resolution

I have the same problem with Mint 11 and my nVidia card. When I first put Mint 11 on it worked fine, then after a month or so, something happened and I am down to 800x 600 it I want it to operate correctly. If I use higher resolutions I find that successive windows have to be smaller and smaller in ...

Then please click the updater (shield-like icon in the tray) which will offer you to update nvidia-current to 295.49. I just ran that code on Terminal and didnt have to click on any Icon. It just updated and seems to be working fine after a reboot. Thanks for the information. I will save that post ...

Re: Monitor Problems

More symptoms. I did figure out how to get rid of the grey line. It was a blank panel and I deleted it. BUT when I tried to move the display up into that space, the display went blank even if I downsized the display area!

Monitor Problems

Running Mint 11 amd a 17" Dell flat screen monitor. Mint cant recognise the monitor even though it used to recognise it. None of the settings make it work properly. The BIG symptom is that clicking the "+" sign to maximise a screen will often result in a BLANK screen. Resizing the screen downward by...

Re: Droid X

OK, now I know. But its confusing what it does. When the USB tethering is "on" there is NO Icon on the "computer" desktop. But when the USB tethering is "off" there IS an ICON called "MB810" but MB810 cannot be opened!!. But in any case, it seems to be exactly backwards of what I would expect for th...

Droid X

I switched from Mint 8 to Mint 11 and now my Droid X is not recognized. With Helena it was instantly recognized as a storage device and I could download pictures. With Katya it is semi recognized, that is the computer knows its there but it cannot be accessed? Whats different?

Re: Minimising and getting it back?

OK, that solved the open windows problem, but I still have a problem getting the clock/calendar to remain on the lower panel. It just keeps having to be reinstalled and I cant make it stay there AND I cannot find ANYWHERE that I can get the "volume" icon on the lower panel so I can adjust the volume...

Minimising and getting it back?

When using a window with Firefox and I want to go get some text from the word processor I usually minimise the Firefox window, go to the menu, open the word processor, find my document, and copy the text I want. Then go back and maximise the firefox window and I am on my way. BUT...when I minimise A...

Re: Cannot display this video mode

That solved my problem. It also solved my menu problem in spades. Prior to correcting the resolution the grub menu didnt appear at all and I thought that was normal. But after correcting the resolution as you describe, I now get a full boot menu with all my old partitions showing on it including the...

Re: Installing printer on LAN ??

Well, its solved again. But this time the solution was a by product, an unintended consequence. After installing 11 I had always had a "cannot display in this video mode" message come up so I was trying to fix this problem and I also had no Grub menu. As I resolved these problems, the printer came b...

Cannot display this video mode

When my just installed Mint 11 boots up, it first displays the message "cannot display this video mode" on a black screen. then after about 30 seconds it displays and goes on like nothing had happened. Is there a way to change the mode, or just find out what its talking about so I can change the vid...

Timeout to password

Is there a way to disable the timeout to password popup so that I can walk away from the computer and come back without having to re-enter the password?
