You can write-protect /boot/grub/grub.conf file using command sudo chattr +i /boot/grub/grub.cfg . If you want to modify, take...

That is mint4win installation, which locates inside /dev/sda2. Snake cannot eat itself, so you have to re-partition via liveCD/USB ..

Re: Login problem - just loops

Can anyone help? The main problem is that you cannot get the boot menu? Hidden * No menu entries are displayed. The splash screen, if configured, will be displayed. * The user can interrupt the boot process and display the menu by holding down the SHIFT key until the menu displays. * GRUB 2 searche...

Re: Linux Mint 13 insallation errors/ USB external Harddive

Partitioning is faulty. External hard drive needs small enough bootable partition in the beginning of the disk. My suggestion:

/ primary 10 to 20 GB
Swap 2 GB logical
/home 10 to 1000´000 GB logical

Actually I do not know, but you could restore all settings this way (probably?)
1. make a folder for hidden files mkdir hidden
2. Move all hidden files to hidden folder mv ~/.* hidden
3. Reboot

Re: One HD but 7 primary partitions??

Windows cannot read linux-partitions. If you make some changes via windows´ disk management, the consequence will be a broken partition table (GParted will show an empty drive). There should be a warning not to use windows´disk management for making changes to linux partitions ..
