Re: Trouble changing from Ubuntu 11.10 to Mint 12

I don't think Windows can create an ext4 filesystem or Linux swap partition. You'll have to do it either from Gparted from the live DVD or during the install process when you get to the partitioning screen in the screenshot in your first post. To answer some of your other questions - foz suggested s...

Re: Trouble changing from Ubuntu 11.10 to Mint 12

How do you access your Ubuntu installation? Do you first log into Windows and then run Ubuntu from within Windows? Or when you turn on the computer do you get to a screen where you have to choose whether you start up with Windows or Ubuntu? I am curious because that ext4 partition seems awful small ...

Re: No more Xubuntu based Linux Mint Xfce.

I also wish they had kept Mint Xfce based on Xubuntu. I currently have Mint 9 Xfce on my primary computer and have no desire to change it. When I tried Mint Debian, and later Mint Debian Xfce, I ended up deleting them because they just didn't work on my machines. I understand the lxde version is now...

What version of Mint 11 are you using? Gnome? If you insert your sd card and open Nautilus, does the card not show up on the left hand side of the Nautilus window?

Re: which one do I choose?

Do you use a 3G USB modem? Looking around I see there are posts about people using 3G USB modems. You should research which Linux distributions are compatible with your modem.

Re: which one do I choose?

The Windows installer, Mint4Win, does not enable you to run windows programs, it is a program to install Mint from Windows. You would boot into Windows like normal, then insert the cd and run Mint4Win, which then installs Mint alongside Windows, and the next time you start up your computer, you can ...

Re: Mint LiveCD on Acer Aspire 4736Z - Monitor/LCD/VGA issue

Try this: Next time you boot from the live DVD, at the boot options, add i915.modeset=0 instead of using vga=xxx If it boots up with the laptop screen working, then you know you can install Mint to the hard drive and make the video fix permanent by editing a grub configuration file. Here's how. Afte...

Re: installing a Trendnet TEW-424UB wireless adapter

Have you tried running the "Hardware Drivers" program? In my Mint 9 Xfce it is in the menu at /System/Hardware Drivers. It will take a minute while it runs before you see anything, then it will tell you if you need any proprietary drivers. If you do, plug the computer into a wired connection to get ...

Re: installing a Trendnet TEW-424UB wireless adapter

Sounds like you have a plan. Bummer about the Trendnet. I bought it because I was tired of the silly antenna on the PCI wireless card breaking off. Here's a word of warning - don't mess around behind your PC too much after you install the PCI wireless, those antennas can break easily.

Re: Need Help installing Mint on an old Dell Latitude C400

Try this - connect an external display to the C400 and boot up. If the external display works, then it is a video issue with kernel modesetting that is described in wayne128's link. Even if the external display does not work, trying wayne128's link might help. The following is from wayne128's link, ...

Re: installing a Trendnet TEW-424UB wireless adapter

I bought a TEW 424UB version 3.1 specifically because I read that it had a good track record of working with Linux out of the box. And it worked just fine on my Linux Mint 9 Xfce system. I did not need to use ndis, the wireless worked when plugged in. Does the wireless work on that machine if you bo...

Re: Re-install question with proper partitioning

If you already have your files backed up on a separate partition then you are ready to start with the installation. What you said here: - install new version of mint only to the previous "/" partition - after installation install PYSDM (Storage Device Manager) to mount the other partition on startup...

Re: Re-install question with proper partitioning

E.g. you installed like this: / on one disk, /home with all documents on another one, now you plan to re-install following the same pattern, so you assign again / to programs and /home to the previous /home partition without erasing all the files on that partition, will those files stay and will th...

Re: Zebra stripes graphics bug?

Sounds like an issue between your graphics card and the linux kernel, not because you are triple booting. I had the same issue with Mint 9 Xfce on a machine at home, it would work fine for a while but then the bottom half of the screen would go black and the top half would have vertical black and wh...

Since you want this next installation to last you for a long time, then I recommend you take the time up front to try out several different flavors of Mint to see which you prefer. Download the iso's for Mint 11 Gnome, Mint 10 Gnome, Mint 10 KDE, and Mint 9 Xfce, get your hands on one or more 2GB us...
