Re: Unofficial Post Your Linux Mint Desktop Thread

Here's my take on a Unity-like desktop that works for me. My sandbox partition has Mint 9 Xfce with Xfce 4.8. My laptop has a high resolution wide screen, so the vertical arrangement is a good use of space, but I don't like how Unity makes you have to do extra clicks or type in a search to get to th...

Re: CD Ripping produces 2.0 kb .mp3's

Do you have lame installed? (Go to synaptic and look up lame). I know that the cd ripper I use (Asunder) requires lame to encode mp3. Or why don't you try installing and using Asunder? Make sure the version is at least 1.9 or higher (I had problems with the earlier version that was in the Mint 9 xfc...

Reorx, do a search here on the forums for the headphones issue. I know that I have seen message subject lines about the same issue, but I haven't read them to see if there were any solutions. It may not be a hardware problem.

I'm a huge fan of Guayadeque. I like the feature where it chooses songs to play based on your starting selection. I like the browser view that shows the album covers. It gets my vote!

Re: Version for 933mhz PIII?

I'm a big fan of Mint 9 Xfce. Even though it's a year old, it is a long term support release, so you still have two years of support. Xfce is lighter than Gnome so it would run a bit better on your computer. Lxde is even lighter, but I don't find that it runs a whole lot faster than Xfce, and Xfce i...

Re: install question about XFCE

If both computers use the same interface for their optical drives (the old computer should be IDE) then you can remove the cd/dvd drive from the better computer and install it into the old computer, then install Mint Xfce from a dvd, then put the drive back into the other computer. Swapping out cd/d...

Check out Pilosopong Tasyo's post about setting up an internet cafe. He has his computers set up so that the users can access only the programs they need and they cannot easily mess up the system settings:

Re: LM 10 Xfce - installed, but no sound

How are you trying to change the volume? By hovering over the sound icon and turning the mouse scroll wheel? Or by left clicking on the sound icon and adjusting the slider? If when you left-click on the sound icon the window that opens does not show any sliders, then add the "Master" volume slider t...

Re: sharing separate /home between releases?

Mint LTS releases are based on Ubuntu LTS releases. The next Ubuntu LTS will be Ubuntu 12.04 (i.e. released in April, 2012), so the next Mint LTS will be some time after April, 2012. Note that the Debian-based Mint editions do not follow this paradigm as they will be continually updated.

Re: sharing separate /home between releases?

I am not a fan of multibooting with shared /home directories (especially when mixing older and newer releases) because of issues with configuration files getting overwritten or shared, as mads indicated. What I like to do is to keep my /home directories separate, and after installation delete the da...

Re: How do I add apps and/or update a Mint LiveUSB drive?

If you install Mint to the pendrive using "Startup disk creator" you have the option to create a persistent USB pendrive install. You can find it in the Mint menu under System. You'll probably need a 4 GB pendrive for it to work. I do it with a 1 GB pendrive, but I don't have room to install many ap...

Re: Burn ISO from Live CD with single DVDR/CDR drive?

I second that. Many newer computers have an option to boot from a USB thumb drive. If your computer has this option you can boot from the Mint 9 live cd then use a 1 GB or larger USB thumb drive and create a live USB with the Mint 10 you have already downloaded. Then reboot with the USB thumb drive,...

sly, the bluebonnets are pretty sparse here in Austin. Very disappointing!
