Re: Laptop Salvage Jobs

Just a few days ago I stumbled upon the HP Stream laptops and was intrigued by them - a low cost, basic laptop, like a Windows-based competitor to Chromebooks. I was intrigued of course at the thought of putting Linux on them and wondered if it was easy. I'm disappointed to see how much trouble you'...

Re: Need help on how to rip a CD with VLC

If you want to use Asunder to rip your files to mp3 format you will probably need to install the "lame" package. You can find it in synaptic.

Re: Cannot get past required space check to install on XP

I think the problem is that you are trying to install from a virtual machine. Try this instead. First thing - make a backup or image of your hard drive in case you accidentally overwrite it during the install. Then: Shut the computer off. Insert your USB stick with Mint into a USB port. Press the po...

Re: Inspiron 1501 RAM Upgrade + Do I Need OS Upgrade? 32 to

I believe that laptop can only handle a max of 2 GB of RAM. I'm not sure if it would boot up but only recognize 2 out of the 16 GB, or if it would fail to boot at all. Either way, you would be wasting your money on the extra RAM.

Re: Freezing after suspend

Try going to Hardware Drivers and choose a different video driver (if you have more than one to choose from). That fixed it for my laptop.

Re: Suggestions about RAW file viewers

I found Irfanview works well under Wine. I had Irfanview installed in Windows in my dual boot machine. If I remember right, I copied the irfanview program directory from Windows over to my Linux partition made a launcher to launch the Irfanview exe file with Wine.

Re: Mint 17 XFCE program installation problem

The xfce weather application had to be updated due to a change in the source of the weather data on the internet. The version of the applet in Linux Mint is the old version, so it no longer works. You can download the deb file for the new version by following the link and choosing the appropriate fi...

Re: Advice needed for drive setup on a 2-drive laptop

Here is a suggested partitioning scheme based on how I partitioned my old 2-drive laptop (sigh, I miss that laptop). I had a smaller SSD for the operating systems and a larger spinning drive for my data. Create partitions on the SSD prior to installing Windows. Make an ntfs partition for Windows wit...

Thanks! I had not known that about the json backup. That actually sounds better than the html method I have been using.

Re: copying my firefox bookmarks to a fresh install

If you just want to transfer your bookmarks and not the more comprehensive approaches shown by the other posters (using sync within Firefox or copying the hidden folder) you could open Firefox, go to Bookmarks, Show All Bookmarks, Import and backup, Export Bookmarks to HTML, then save that html file...

Re: Need a CD Ripper

In the preferences in Asunder you can choose to save the ripped file as mp3 at the quality setting of your choice, which should save you a step from your current process.

Consider waiting a couple more weeks until Mint 17 xfce is out. It should perform noticeably faster than Cinnamon on that laptop.

I use, and really like, Rapid Photo Downloader. I don't think it scans for already downloaded photos, but I normally use it by selecting the photos I want to download.

Re: Odd Things With Mint LTS

For your first question, it sounds like you are accidentally rolling-up your window. It's a feature, not a bug, although I prefer not to use it and disable it in my xfce installation. If you place your mouse cursor over the top bar of a window and scroll with the mouse wheel, it rolls up the window ...

Re: Mint 13 Maya and WIn XP file acess question

When I set up a dual boot machine I create symlinks to link my Linux and Windows Music, Pictures, Video etc folders to the corresponding Windows folders so that, for example, the Mint "Music" directory points to the Windows "My Documents/My Music" directory. The short description of what you need to...

Re: HPLIP can't find 1102w printer in LAN.

I've got the same printer. It works great for me, but I installed it a different way. I first installed it on a Windows xp machine using the driver install program I downloaded from the HP support website. After that, I would click on the "add printer" option in my Mint computers and the printer wou...

Re: Why does Firefox automatically launch on boot up??

When you click the shut down icon in the application menu, you get a window with buttons for "Log Out", "Restart", "Shut Down" etc. There should be a check box in the lower left that says "Save session for future logins". If, some time in the past, you had Firefox open when you shut down the system,...

Re: Which do you prefer: Cinnamon or XFCE?

Historically my computers have been too old/not powerful enough to handle the heavy desktops like KDE, Unity, Cinnamon, and Gnome, so I used Xubuntu and since Mint 8, I have been using Mint Xfce. My latest hand-me-down can actually run Cinnamon snappily, so I have Cinnamon on that one but Mint Xfce ...
