Re: New to Linux: Install questions

Please read the release notes before you install Mint on your laptop. There are some issues with various Samsung laptops that might brick your laptop.

Re: Dell Latitude D610 - Mint 13 Xfce - no wireless

I'm not sure if this works in Mint 13, but look to see if this tool is available. Connect the laptop to the internet using a wired connection then run the "Software Sources" tool from "Menu->Preferences->Software Sources" and click on the "Additional Drivers" tab. You should see a recommended driver...

Re: Dell latitude D630. Not able to turn on build in wireles

Try this. Connect the laptop to the internet using a wired connection then run the "Software Sources" tool from "Menu->Preferences->Software Sources" and click on the "Additional Drivers" tab. You should see a recommended driver for "Broadcom" or "wireless". Select it and install it. You may need to...

Re: Create a basic/restricted easy to use environment

Check out Pilosopong Tasyo's post about setting up an internet cafe. It's a couple of years old, but should still have some good tips. He has his computers set up so that the users can access only the programs they need and they cannot easily mess up the system settings: http://forums.linuxmint.com/...

Re: Netbook: install from USB and best version

Note that you cannot just copy the iso file onto the usb thumbdrive, you have to use a program like unetbootin to "install" the iso onto the thumbdrive, or, in the case of the newer hybrid isos, you can use dd. See this tutorial: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/744

Re: LM13 XFCE - no Sound

In the settings, try changing Intel82801DBICH4Alsamixer to PlaybackEingebautesAudioAnalogStereoPulseAudioMixer (you should be able to copy the PulseAudio line and paste it over the Alsamixer line.

Re: Linux Mint 13 Xfce released!

Thanks Clem and team! I've installed it on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1721) and love it. I still have a bit of configuring to do before I have it all personalized, but hopefully by tomorrow night. Suspend works, woo hoo! (It hasn't worked since Mint 8, not Mint's fault, it was the kernel) Bluetooth wo...

I followed the instructions in the link under "The Solution" and it worked for my Dell Inspiron 1721 with BCM4311 wireless. I am posting this from my new installation of Mint 13 Xfce with working wireless, thanks!

Re: Mint 13 KDE vs XFCE vs Ubuntu etc

Your RAM is at the minimum needed to install and run xfce. Don't get me wrong, you should be able to run xfce just fine, but if you could get some more RAM and bring it up to 1 Gig, you would be sitting pretty for years to come. I think KDE would run a bit slow on that machine. LXDE would run quicke...

Re: Mint 13 KDE vs XFCE vs Ubuntu etc

What are the specs on your laptop? (Number of processors, processor speed, amount of RAM) If it is less than 6 years old, Mint 13 Xfce should run just fine. It may run fine even if older than 6 years old.

aelfinn, the final release is in testing right now. If approved for release, it normally takes a few days for the iso files to be uploaded to all the mirrors and the announcement made.

Re: which Linux for old Laptop??

Mint 13 Mate and the soon-to-be-released Mint 13 Xfce should both work fine on those specs (I'm not familiar with the video card, but those two versions do not require 3D graphics). Mint 13 Xfce is currently out as a Release Candidate, hopefully the stable release will be very soon. Both are long te...

Re: make /home as ntfs

Yes, you can link the download folders. I'm not that familiar with Windows 7, but I believe it has a Downloads folder that you can link to, although Internet Explorer may not save all downloaded files there by default (it might try to put pictures in the pictures folder for example). Windows XP does...

Re: make /home as ntfs

When I set up a dual boot machine I link my Linux and Windows Music, Pictures, Video etc folders together so that, for example, the Windows "My Documents/My Music" directory points to the same directory as the Mint "Music" directory. The Linux home folder needs to allow permissions etc., so I make t...

Re: USB auto-mount issue

There is a bug in Mint 9 XFCE with automounting USB drives. When you installed Mint XFCE, did you choose the option during the installation to auto-login without without a password (when you turn on your computer does Mint boot up without you ever seeing a login screen or having to enter your passwo...
