Re: mintUpdate and apt-get

I think this article explains the thinking: http://fossforce.com/2014/10/synaptic-vs-update-manager-in-linux-mint/ although I tend to agree with you that perhaps more emphasis should be made on the reason not to do as you do and use apt-get instead of the Mint system.

Re: Rebecca fails to boot from dvd-media

Hi

A full spec of the laptop may help.

Also do any dvds play in the drive?

If Dvds do not play then try a distro that will load on a cd perhaps PcLinuxos Mate.

Re: Install issues, please help

Sorry it is important to know exactly the spec of the cpu. What is the operating system on the machine at present and what is the make and model of the computer?
Also which version of Mint 17.1 are you attempting to install?

Silly question but have you tried a different browser say Firefox to see whether you get the same cpu usage?

Re: Hello from Former Windows World

Welcome to the Linux community.

Mint 15 is obsolete but I am running 17.1 on a AMD Athlon 3200 64bit with 2gb ram and it runs perfectly.

Re: Mint 17 over Mint 15 installation issues

Firstly Mint 15 has been obsolete since January 2014.

As far as your new DVD is concerned, I would check the MD5 of it.

Mint 17.1 is the latest version and I would download that and burn a new DVD and try again.

Re: how to get cario-dock in start menu

Sorry I am not sure what you mean. Cairo-dock is added to the menu automatically when installed and is also added to the startup applications ( at least in the Mate edition)

Re: samba share outside the LAN

I have been using Teamviewer for years to support friends linux installations and have never come across any security issues. It is particularly useful as you can do a remote access to your home machine and is available to Windows, Mac & Linux users.

Re: Issue with Boot Order

Sorry to hear you have problems. I assume that as you are running Windows 8 that your machine has UEFI firmware and this is probably causing your issue. Have a look at this tutorial: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2014/06/11/how-to-dual-boot-linux-mint-17-and-windows-8-on-a-pc-with-uefi-firmware/ I hope ...

I would question whether the downloaded iso is good as you seem to be saying that you produced the usb stick and dvd from the same file. Is it possible to try either one or the other on a different machine?
