Re: Java7 u51 certificate issues - not respecting exceptions

Ah, it works if I use another account on the same Mint PC. So.. where else is Java looking and finding something that's causing it to work with one user but not another? It's not just ~/.java because I've deleted that before reinstalling. It's not somewhere outside ~ because - unless it's storing in...

Java7 u51 certificate issues - not respecting exceptions

I am using Oracle Java 7 via the webupd8 PPA, currently oracle-java7-installer_7u51-0~webupd8~1_all.deb, on Mint 16/MATE. The 7u51 version changed the handling of signing certificates and it's a lot fussier about what it will run. Specifically, unless you add an exception, it doesn't like self-signe...

Microsoft HD-3000 webcam - v slow starting to record audio

I have a UVC webcam (a Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000) that's supported according to http://www.ideasonboard.org/uvc/ It's recognised by the PC (Mint16 x86, MATE) and lsusb reckons that it is a Bus 001 Device 007: ID 045e:0779 Microsoft Corp. LifeCam HD-3000 If I run Cheese, it shows video, and can take ...

Re: [Mint 16 cinnamon ] login delay problem..

It's something upstream that goes 'Oooh, a webcam, I will (do something that takes a while)', because it's not Mint-specific and happens with Xubuntu, for example.

Someone probably thinks logging in via facial recognition is a good idea.

Re: MDM and cpu usage

Oh, my solution has been to switch the login screen to be the GTK one. I'm sure there are people who need (or even want) to have fancy HTML5-enabled login screens, but I am not one of them. Amongst the many reasons for that is that I spend about five seconds on the login screen every time I boot... ...

Re: Relative popularity of the various versions

This pie chart looks me a bit weird. Users of the "x64 Edition" also use some kind of environment, thus this is not a category like the others. Ditto for 'Main' edition! I think part of the issue is that those stats go back a long way - I do not believe so many people are currently using older vers...

Relative popularity of the various versions

I know that a variety of things mean any statistics will be estimates, but what's the relative popularity of.. Cinnamon vs MATE vs LMDE vs etc and 64-bit vs 32 bit installs? My feeling is that there are more people using 32-bit versions than some would expect, because - unlike Windows - using PAE pr...

Re: 'Stylish' the Firefox addon - why is this installed?

OK, fine, if you say so, but why does LinuxMint insist on installing Stylish? What are they doing with it?

I know the answer for the 'search enhancer' - attempting to make money. Is it the same here?

Re: 'Stylish' the Firefox addon - why is this installed?

"You can get anything you want at" ... ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/ You can indeed, but as you can see from the thread about 'downgrading' to 25.0.1, installing from the .bz2 archives there is not as simple as downloading a .deb and doing sudo -i whatever.deb .. and you risk br...

'Stylish' the Firefox addon - why is this installed?

As per the title, what useful function has it? I am having huge problems with Firefox 26.0 repeatedly crashing. Firefox 25.0 also did that, until the 25.0.1 release. If the latter were still in the repositories, I'd have gone back to that weeks ago. More than one user on the same PC has the same pro...

Re: Downgrading to Firefox 25

It would be lovely to have the time to see if it is a plugin problem, but they have all worked fine for ages, including with 25.0.1, and none of them are obscure. Looking, another user on the same PC has similar problems with 26.0 (and had them with 25.0) and the only plugins we have in common are....

Re: Downgrading to Firefox 25

Thank you for this - I had noticed that 25.0.1 had disappeared from the repositories* and, while I knew of the .bz2 option, I didn't want to try and make it work by myself. For me, Firefox 25.0 was a buggy pile of poo. It crashed more times than any other version of Firefox I have used since Mozilla...

Re: mdmwebkit - high cpu usage (Mint 15 Cinnamon)

This was while both users were logged in, BTW, so mdmwebkit and Xorg were busy talking to themselves. Rebooting has stopped it, for now, even though I've used the login screen three times (me, switching to second user, and back to me). I'm using the binary ATI/AMD drivers on a A6 CPU's GPU, so 'reas...

Hmm, since I had the screensaver lock the screen, it's happening for me to, using Petra 16 MATE edition.

It's not good, is it?
