Re: Remaking the (community) website?

At first I assumed this was a troll post, but after seeing the responses... I'm guessing the OP is talking about some kind of server-side Java? I wasn't aware that such a thing was really in use, but anything's possible. However, I don't see any real advantage; wouldn't that require a lot more custo...

Re: Video Tearing - Mint Maya XFCE

My netbook happens to have the same graphics as yours, and I too get a bit of tearing when using GNOME 3 with Mutter/Metacity. But honestly, I've never been able to get "tear-free" Linux. Ever. Even on my desktop, I still get tearing. It's ridiculous that most compositors don't let you jus...

Re: Alsa or Pulseaudio

So then if everyone concedes that Linux audio is a mess, why hasn't anyone fixed it? The situation has been the same since I started using Linux in 2007. Sure, there aren't as many problems now, but I still occasionally have problems with programs basically taking over the sound card, stopping Pulse...

Re: Alsa or Pulseaudio

Why couldn't the features like the mixing simply be written into the ALSA kernel module? Seems to me that just having that would eliminate a lot of the need for Pulseaudio, and would reduce latency problems.

Re: 4Gs of RAM and system still sluggish!

Cinnamon is slow as hell unless you have updated hardware specs. Older computers and netbooks don't run it very well, which I think is ridiculous.

I've found that GNOME 3 Classic is just about as fast as XFCE, and faster than MATE.

Cinnamon should work better on netbooks

I've been using LM13 on my EEE PC 1005HA for a while now. It's great. Except for Cinnamon. I love Cinnamon, but it is unreasonably slow to load on my netbook. Not only does it make bootup time longer, but it's slow as heck when using it. Just typing in the menu takes forever. This is also a problem ...

Re: XAMPP - downloads php pages instead of displaying them

I've never had that problem, but you might be able to fix that by adding a MIME type for php files to a .htaccess file.

You are working through localhost, right?

Re: EEE Pc internal mic distorted and full of static

I was able to improve my sound by adding the position fix line to the alsa settings file. Lowering the "front" mic level to zero doesn't seem to make a difference. At least my mic is usable now, but it stil has a little "crackle" to it. I attached another sample to this post of w...

EEE Pc internal mic distorted and full of static

I have recently bought an EEE PC 1005ha which, for those who don't know, is a netbook. It's worked great for me in nearly every way when using LM13, but when I try to talk to my girlfriend through Skype, it my voice sounds absolutely horrid. The microphone technicaly "works", but there is ...

Re: Wacom Intuos4: ring/wheel not working

Hey gwi, I've gotten my girlfriend's Intuos4 to work with Linux Mint 13(Ubuntu 12.04) with support for the touch ring. It should be possible to get it to work for you. First off, can we make sure that you have the latest xf86-input-wacom? The version that came with LM13 worked with our Intuos4 worke...

Using Mutter with Cinnamon

I recently got a netbook and installed my favorite Linux distro on it(hint: Mint 13). The problem is that Cinnamon significantly slows things down. It's not completely unusable, but when I am using the Cinnamon session, the frame rate of videos I play goes down and playback is choppy. Other aspects ...

Re: Better wacom support

There is no point in posting this here as the linuxmint developers do not write the hardware drivers or configuration tools. You stand a better chance of getting this noticed on the ubuntu suggestion page. I beg to differ, because the hardware drivers(plus command line OLED support) already exist a...

Better wacom support

Wacom tablets do work out of the box in Linux, but the configuration is severely lacking. Granted, things have improved recently, but the stock Wacom configuration tool is kinda lousy. It sometimes doesn't even work at all. It also doesn't allow you to change the OLED on the Intuos tablets. You can ...

Re: Install Wine on Linux Mint 13 MATE 64 bit

I always install Wine from PPAs. The ubuntu repos never have the most up-to-date version of Wine, or any other programs for that matter. LTS version, whatever. If all else fails, PlayOnLinux works pretty well and it allows you to switch between Wine versions easily. But it's a little less convenient.

Re: Any chance of Mint for Android?

Android apps will probably never come to desktop Linux because of the fact that the only ARM emulators that exist are very slow. The closest thing to getting Android apps in Linux is to install the x86 eeepc version of Android in Virtualbox, but that kinda defeats the purpose. Even then, that versio...

Re: Maya in general (also Mate)

I think 13 is one of the best releases, but I do agree that it isn't flawless. I don't understand the broken pipe error, but it doesn't seem to effect my shutdown. My biggest problem was with mdm; on login, there'd be a big blue box covering half of the screen! Your problems with Wine could be solve...

Re: Nautilus stinks! Why in the heck are we still using it?

If there are superior tools out there, then why should we use the inferior ones? Exactly. Anyone complaining about Nautilus, why bother continuing to use it? Indeed, "Why the heck are 'we' still using it?" There are so many other file managers out there, just install one you like and use ...

Nautilus stinks! Why in the heck are we still using it?

It had some potential, I'll give it that. But like most of GNOME's projects, it pretty much got chucked in the trash. I remember using it years ago on Ubuntu and it hasn't changed in any way since. Actually, I'm wrong about that. It has changed, but for the worse! What happened to customizing the to...
