Re: Errors installing VirtualBox 5.1? This might help.

My understanding is that virtualbox-guest-dkms and virtualbox-guest-x11 are the packages to be installed in a guest system to give video driver functionality. They are useless to the host. As a matter of fact, when you boot mint in verbose mode, you see a message saying that your not in a virtual ma...

Looks like fairly standard hardware. You didn't identify your wifi, but most Intel and realtek chips are supported.

Boot the live disk and test it out.

That looks like a LAN boot screen. You can disable it in BIOS.

Re: Where to update drivers when there's nothing in Driver Manager

That guide is somewhat obscure. try using a more fully featured text editor like gedit or xed. Just navigate to the .sh file and open it.

By the way, I suggest you upgrade to the 4.8 series kernel before running the driver install.

Xfce or mate. No desktop effects. No 3d. No dual outputs. You may be stuck using vesa drivers. Good luck.

Re: System Requirements - which Linux Mint.?

I haven't played with the Xfce desktop. Wonder what it's like.? Runs great on lower spec'd systems. Close to a "Windows experience" as any in Linux, IMO. It is very stable and durable and consistent. My Daily driver for 5 years until recently.[/quote Great to hear. I'm sold on trying Xfce. A...

That's incorrect. It depends on the GPU model. Newer cards can use the amdgpu pro driver. Older cards still have the open source driver. It's odd that inxi is not identifying it.

You already have a CUDA install in the repos:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install nvidia-cuda-toolkit

The problem is particular to MInt Cinnamon, and I have had it strike in virtual machines several times. I have no explanation, but I don't use the Cinammon edition so I never bothered to trouble shoot it.

Re: Restore UEFI boot?

Ok, as i understand it, you have installed Mint, if select BIOS (legacy mode) it boots, but not in UEFI? In that case it is highly likely you installed Mint in legacy mode. If that is the case, it is 99% guaranteed that you have an MBR partition scheme, which does NOT support UEFI booting. The other...

Re: Disk drives in Linux Mint

I wouldn't call someone who's new to Linux a "Bonehead" No one called anyone a "bonehead". The "bonehead" statement was simply a statement that no one can unmount the root partition, while it is in use.. Indeed. I meant that gparted was fairly idiot proof. The worst you could do is delete your swap...

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140

Seems a bit better. Haven't had to wipe the GPU slot in 16 hours.

FYI, on a gtx 970, after some experimenting, nvidia-375 gets the best ppd. nvidia-381 is actually slower.

Been using 4.10 since it seems to support Ryzen better. No issues. Make sure your driver is compatible. Nvidia 375 is the minimum I believe.

Re: Disk drives in Linux Mint

This is needlessly complex. Attach the drive, boot the PC, run gparted and select the drive, and format it. Each drive is identified by vendor and size. Unless you have multiple identical drives, it's not an issue. And even if you were a bonehead, you can't unmount your root partition. Period.
