I have no idea how I managed to get a UEFI Mint install so I suppose I should wipe everything and start over. Thanks for the help, hopefully I'll get it right with another try.
Is working or not? UEFI installs are easier to troubleshoot in the long run.

Re: AMD linux desktop build

There are b450 boards than support the 3200g out teh box. The 3200g is Zen +, not Zen 2. Any BIOS less than a year old will work. I can't necessarily recommend you get a discrete GPu, since you are looking 200-250$ minimum for a low end card, and if you don't game that's a waste of money. You can ge...

Between the three version, XFCE, MAte and Cinnamon, you should find one that works for you. If not, you can always install KDE on top like some of the insane people in this forum

How did you install the 5.4 series kernel?

What was your original installation version?

Re: Does an operating system upgrade also upgrade file systems on all disks? <SOLVED>

More precisely, if your OS upgrade brings in improvements or new features to btrfs, any existing btrfs partitions will not benefit from those unless you actively implement them. FOr example if the new kernel allows zstd compression, unless you enable it in fstab, it will not be applied to existing d...

Compatibility should be fine.

But as mentioned, get a cheaper board and a better CPU.

Nope that doesn't look right.

What does

Code: Select all

Re: Weird graphics output after update

What is your desktop environment now and what is compositor? The DE is still LXDE (as shown by inxi ). As mentioned above booting with an older kernel (5.3.0-62) instead of the current one (5.4.0-42) does the job. What does "compositor" mean? Btw lxde is EOL. LxQt is the new kid in the block. Well,...

Keyed in "xed admin:///etc/fstab" in the Terminal and got this result. What is happening?Where is fstab.png
Damn good question. The command works fine in my Mint 20 xfce.

Alternatively try this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install mousepad

Code: Select all

sudo mousepad /etc/fstab

Re: Games not working

You can try the following. 1. Get rid of steam sudo apt purge steam 2. Re-add the i386 packages sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 3. Re-install steam sudo apt install steam Look at the ouput and make sure it pulls in a bunch of 1386 packages. 4. Optional: add Lutris. Lutris is very good at pulling i...

Re: Games not working

There are issues with the AmD drivers on Ubuntu 20.04. Some people have experience screen corruption. Anyway make sure you added the i386 architecture before installing steam. Make sure Vulkan is installed If that does not resolve the issue, we can manually upgrade your 3d drivers with an external P...

Don't bother with a separate /boot partition. 1gb will cause you problems in a few months.

Re: AMD-Vi firmware bug error during boot

That error is of no conséquence.

Those of us old enough to have used Linux for more than a decade remember when every boot was greeted with a wall of text. Back then, if you got to your desktop, you considered yourself luck and kept going.

Make sure fast boot is deactivated in BIOS.

If you have any windows keys registered in bios, erase them.

Re: Multi-user access to programs installed via Wine

Wine creates a "bottle" so to speak. An isolated windows emulation environment. The bottle is contained in one of the hidden folders in your home directory, so other users can't access it.

You can install wine programs system wide, but it's fairly complex IIRC.
