Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed

Who knew something as seemingly simple as graphics drivers could turn out to be such a royal pain in the rear? I'll do what I can to help test things, especially since now I know how to keep my laptop from booting to the terminal. I bet the rest of the Mint community has little to no idea how nice i...

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed

It turns out we both forgot to have me run sudo nvidia-xconfig before the reboot because I got an 800x600 resolution screen when I booted back in. I still have the complaint form KWin, plus I'm noticing some bowing in the Note plasmoid on my desktop. Hopefully this screenshot will show what I'm talk...

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed

I didn't think I needed to reboot but I've been fighting the drivers enough I wanted to ask. On a side note, my install got me bitten by the no audio bug but the tip in the LMDE KDE UP5 thread got it fixed pretty easily. I'll let you know how things go driver wise after the reboot. ETA: I forgot to ...

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed

I'm in PAE now (I hate only using half of my CPU). Should I do a fresh boot before trying that or do you think I'd be safe(-er) to try that once my Webilder get in the vm is done? Either way I'll transcribe the steps to make sure I have them handy if I wind up back at the console to log back in.

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed

I did install the PAE kernel first. I used the 486 kernel because I was stuck at the console when I rebooted after installing the kernel. Now that I think about it I suspect I really need to address my issue to the Nvidia driver thread, but my issues did start with DDM.

Re: Device Driver Manager - Help needed

I ended up reinstalling LMDE KDE to fix an ffmpeg problem that broke Electric Sheep (an update from deb-multimedia introduced errors in rendering that I oculdn't seem to fix by rolling updates back) and I'm having some problems with my Nvidia drivers. I did get the PAE kernel installed on my lenovo ...

Re: deleting system wallpapers

I love the slideshow option for wallpapers. I've collected a nice large collection of walls and I have an active rotation folder and an inactive folder so I can move walls back and forth as I get tired of some. There should be a checkbox on the Desktop Settings dialog, right below where it says Imag...

Re: date font size in task bar

I've also seen that resizing the panel's height can change the font size. I'm not sure how I did it but I have the time on top and a customized Short date on the bottom.

Re: Just getting started with Mint Wallpapers

They look pretty nice. Have you considered using Dropbox? There's a free account that doesn't seem to have limitations on file types or individual file sizes and you can put them in the Public area of your Dropbox and share them without problem. That's how I share my customized Fortunes list via my ...

Re: How much space should I leave for a new user?

About your swap size, check this post: http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=117430&p=650110#p650101 And about your adventure you're starting... My opinion, best to do a fully clean/fresh install since you mention that you have the idea that 1 or 2 things are broken or messed up. Make sur...

How much space should I leave for a new user?

I get the feeling that I've well and truly messed up my system and am looking at another partial nuke and pave to install LMDE KDE UP5 again. I'm really thinking my KDE user account has gotten messed up so I want to create a brand new user with this install so i can selectively migrate some of my cu...

Re: Can you close a program from the terminal with TERM?

I can close the Smile Desktop without a problem, but it includes a system tray icon that stays until you completely close the program, and it doesn't recognize right-clicks under Wine. That's what I was hoping to close from the terminal but I'll just use the handy System Monitor icon I put in Fancy ...

Re: Can you close a program from the terminal with TERM?

Not sure of the exact command. Open Terminal and copy/paste: sudo man kill it will give you the variants for the correct command. Thanks. I see I can specify signal 15 SIGTERM but I'm getting a complaint about needing a process or job ID, and I'd prefer to use the program name (Smile.exe) so I can ...

Can you close a program from the terminal with TERM?

I've got the Smile Desktop (a Windows app) running under CrossOver Linux but I'm unable to close the program from the icon in the system tray. I can close it from the System Manager/Top by sending the TERM signal and that's the way that seems to work best for me. I know I can close it from the termi...

That would rock, Ronnie. I really think the KDE variant of LMDE's going to really take off one of these days.

Re: The unofficial LMDE KDE UP5 [UPDATE: 16/10/2012]

I'm trying to install LMDE KDE UP5 on my old EEE PC 701 (I'm experimenting!), but it keeps stalling when installing ktorrent.mo . I've tried downloading the ISO several times, so it can't be a corrupt ISO file. Tried booting both normal and compatibility modes too. Any ideas? Hi, Ronnie! Glad to se...

Re: The unofficial LMDE KDE UP5 [UPDATE: 16/10/2012]

Um, no. I must have missed that configuring them in a file is a preferred way to do it. NM has always worked for me in LMDE. Configuring in the interfaces file is not the preferred way. I needed to have a wireless connection at boot time before fstab was executed. Without it I have serious problems...

Re: The unofficial LMDE KDE UP5 [UPDATE: 16/10/2012]

Hopefully ZZ can help because I've got nothing. I do notice that when the KDE desktop first appears I can see visually that I have a wireless connection, and due to how I have my system set up I get confirmation that I'm logged into the Starbucks wifi once things settle down a bit but I'm not seein...
