Re: Few comments and questions from a new user

Probably not. Mint is using a custom version of Ubiquity, and making a non live installer would need more resources than the team has available. It might make it in the future, but for now that is a non project. But I agree, I want an alternate installer for Mint as well, the live installer can be b...

Re: Evolution?

I think you will save less than 1 MB or maybe up to 50 or 60 MB, not sure. Installed software barely takes up any space in Linux. You would probably save more by running: sudo aptitude autoremove once in a while.. And About Me is integrated in GNOME, so basically this software is a part of the GNOME...

Re: What's with all the linux names?

Open source is more fast moving than commercial software, sometimes there is a new version available daily. When it comes to a distribution, I would recommend that you hop a bit around, start with an easy one, like Mint, Mandriva, Ubuntu and to some degree OpenSuSE, then when you feel comfortable wi...

Re: Evolution?

The evolution packages is either backends or libraries, why would you remove them? You don't have evolution installed, just parts of it..

Browse all you want ;)

And Remove mintmenu and window list, add Menu Bar, move that panel up, create a new panel, add Show desktop, workspace switcher and window list. BTW, this is the ubuntu setup, and not the default GNOME setup IIRC

Re: Few comments and questions from a new user

Hi, Mint is the second Linux distro I've tried (started with Xubuntu and Ubuntu) and I must say so far I like it a lot. While in Ubuntu the installation of codecs was painless and automatic, including them is great when running from the CD. Anyway I have a few questions comments and I do apologize ...

Re: Move Linux Mint from one PC to another?

The main issue is hardware compatibility, like you try to boot a nVidia xorg.conf into an ATi machine.. I would just wait until your computer gets back and configure it again, it shouldn't take long to get it up and running again. You can always move your themes over (/home/user/.themes/) and bookma...

Re: Keyboard Layout

Choose the right localization options:
System - Preferences - Keyboard, then select the keyboard layout tab and press add, choose the correct one from the list, and remove the other one listed there. Make sure it is checked off as default as well. Reboot and it should be working.

Re: WiFi woes

That card is supported with open source drivers from Intel, and is reported to be a bit buggy with ndiswrapper. I think the first issues was that you have to many drivers installed in ndiswrapper, which caused a conflict, and it still can be a conflict if you have iwl, mac80211 and one more module l...

Re: File permissions on external drive.

This can often be solved with chown on the folder, but some file systems have issues with Linux right management (FAT32). This can easily be solved by adding the disk to /etc/fstab.

Automatically connected networks solved

How do I edit the list of the wireless networks? My school has 2 unsecured wireless networks, and I used the guest one to get my VPN client installed, and now my machine automatically connect to that each time I boot at school. But I want to use the main network, as I got the VPN stuff working. Anyo...

Sorry to everybody about that!!! (quite insecure?) Guess I had no right to be rude.. Just a little bit confusing when everybody tells me to give more information, or exact exaples.. Like: <You still haven't told what wifi care you have. Some of these people are really good and helpful, but even the...

Yeah, I regularly do a fresh install, for some reason or another :) And I always forget to backup some things, though I usually manage to recover from it ;)
