Re: Bigpond Australia file mirror

In Norway, I don't think there is anyone with download limits at all, though the service of some of them is pretty crappy. And there is just one or two companies with their own infrastructure (Telenor got the tax payers copper wires for free when they became a private company a few years ago, used t...

Re: Mint's philosophi?

Mint does use the same package base as Ubuntu, but there are subtle differences. I can't point to exact differences, but I know for a fact that the card you are referring to worked better under Mint 4 with a /b network than it did in Ubuntu 7.10. 7.10 kept on dropping the connection and gave varying...

Re: Mint's philosophi?

Each version of Mint (Main) is built on the previous release, and not Ubuntu. As Mint forked from Edgy, there are some differences, mainly with Wireless, which seems to work better in Mint..

Re: Mint's philosophi?

Mint is nothing more than a Ubuntu Linux with some tools, like mintMenu, mintUpdate (which fetches updates from the official ubuntu-repos, medibuntu and (for ff with the google-search engine mint-cash cow and the four or five mint "tools) the own mint-repo, mint Backup (nice, but not important, cau...

Re: Mint Hurd

As the Debian crew don't have an easy way of installing the hurd version yet (even though it was greatly simplified a year or two ago, IIRC), I would not see any other distro supporting hurd in the near future, maybe Fedora once/if hurd nears production level. I've also been looking at hurd from tim...

BTW, Mepis is now back to Debian (testing I think), and is no longer based on Ubuntu :)

Re: Is there an RC2?

With Elyssa, RC and Beta has been used over each other, like Beta 042 (RC2) or something like that.. It could be an idea to revise the ISO after a while though, as Elyssa is a LTS, so that late installers don't have to download 4.341 updates after install... Look at it as an SP :D

Re: /Home Partition vs no /Home Partition discussion

For multibooting it is not recommended to have a shared home partition, at least not with the same user name, can muck it self up pretty good then.. I too prefer the /home/username/Data way of dealing with data. That way I can configure my desktop each time I do a fresh install (I've done two or thr...

Re: Mint update not functioning

Have you tried to manually refresh mintUpdate? Hit the refresh button after you've opened it.

You can also try to open mintUpdate, then wait til it has done it's thing, then open a terminal window and type in:

Code: Select all

sudo aptitude update

Re: Faster boot.

There are some guides that are talk about tweaking ubuntu. The most useful I found was a little software called sysv-rc-conf which lets you enable and disable services/deamons. You can also try concurrency (can't remember how its done right now), which seemed to increase the performance and boot tim...

Re: Elyssa doesn't run after choosing OS in GRUB menu

I think you have to edit your /etc/fstab so that it use /dev/sdxx instead of UUID. Could you explain me what do you mean exactly?? Just what it say really, changing the way fstab knows what disk to mount ....and mount your root partition (/) How can I mount it is live session?? The live session rec...

Re: Can I safely resize swap partition?

I have 4GB ram on my system and use 2GB Swap, Elyssa crashes several times in one session, should I increase Swap size ? If so, What is UUID of device name that I should change, and how I do that ? You should not increase it, if anything you should make it smaller. The total of swap and RAM shouldn...

Re: Elyssa doesn't run after choosing OS in GRUB menu

I think you have to edit your /etc/fstab so that it use /dev/sdxx instead of UUID. Run a live session, and mount your root partition (/), and edit /etc/fstab: sudo gedit /media/sdxx/etc/fstab (you need to change the path, of course) Then you will see something like: # /dev/sda1 UUID=ccebdb74-f621-4b...

Re: Elyssa doesn't run after choosing OS in GRUB menu

How did you rearrange partitions?
I see one of two things have happened:
1. GRUB tries to boot into the wrong partition
2. UUID hell.

Mint doesn't use piblic alpha testing. You just have to wait until the beta version is released.

Look at remastersys, don't have links available, but there is a (sub) forum here concerning remastersys.

Re: Linux Mint recommended requirements

Around the same, though the minimum requirements on Ubuntu is lower because of the alternate install CD. Recommended is 512MB RAM and 1 GHz CPU, but it can run on lower as, though the live session will be sluggish.
