Re: If Linux Mint disappeared tomorrow, what would you use?

Lol.. this is tough. I would like to use Crunchbang, but it's based on Debian Stable, so meh (yea I know I can change the software sources, I run it in a VM when I am feeling bored :P). Maybe elementary or Ubuntu? Idk..

Re: LMDE stable?

I would suggest you to mintify Debian stable, rather than the other way around. AFAIK, the Debian stable snapshot has software that is older than the LMDE snapshot [confirmation needed], so I really don't know how well the downgrading will work out once you change the sources list. Here, see this tu...

Gnome 3 release postponed by 6 months

The delay of the release comes for a number of reasons. The primary indicator of the unreadiness of the release is the massive number of exceptions that have been requested and granted during the hard code freeze period. There have been several last-minute API changes that have the potential to har...

Re: Not able to create a launcher for matlab

Thanks for your reply, but I don't think it's an issue with MATLAB itself. And I used the launcher provided by that tutorial any how.

The thing is, I can launch it in the terminal simply using the command "/usr/local/MATLAB/R2010/bin/matlab". I just want to create a launcher for it.

Re: Ubuntu Changes, Will Linux Mint as Well?

So GNome 3 is not the same as GNome - I'm thinking that G3 is some sort of framework? Well I guess i will try Linux Mint 10 and see how that Go's :D Yes, currently Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora use the Gnome 2 desktop framework so to speak. Ubuntu will be splitting away from Gnome in it's next release...

Re: Ubuntu Changes, Will Linux Mint as Well?

Hello and welcome. 1. Linux Mint is going to use Gnome 3 in it's next release according to it's main developer Clem. It won't ship Gnome Shell by default but it will most likely be available in the repo. 2. About Ubuntu's move to Wayland there is nothing official yet even from Canonical. From what I...

I used to think like that too. But, very recently I realized that GIMP is quite good and easy for simple tasks too, and that's all I do, probably even less than OP.

[SOLVED] Not able to create a launcher for matlab

Hello, My Matlab executable script is stored as "/usr/local/MATLAB/R2010b/bin/matlab". I have a matlab.desktop launcher which contains: #!/usr/bin/env xdg-open [Desktop Entry] Type=Application Icon=/usr/share/icons/matlab.png Name=MATLAB R2010b Comment=Start MATLAB - The Language of Technical Comput...

Re: Sound Schemes

I agree, the simpler you can make it the better. But, (i) priorities, (ii) simpler for user doesn't mean simple for the developer.

I am sure eventually this will be done, the question is when.

It worked today. Maybe it's some update that I did, or it was because of something else.

Re: Dedoimeido on Gnome 3

It's got to do with the "Always Connected" slogan. While he put it strongly, a majority of the computers don't have broadband or even continuous access to internet connection (and I suspect the author has experienced working in such places). The Gnome team is being highly presumptuous by including s...

Dedoimeido on Gnome 3

http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/gnome-3.html TL;DR of his article: it's shiny but useless for someone who needs to be productive and multitask. Oh and Unity sucks too. Excerpts from his article I agree most with Always connected I hate this slogan. It is the most racist and condescending piece o...

Some issues with XFCE Debian

EDit: I guess I should mention that I am running XFCE on Virtualbox. 1. I did a "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" and it went fine. The updates notification icon still showed that there are packages to be upgraded, so when I tried upgrading through this I got the error message: "Could no...

This is a much awaited improvement.

For LMDE, if I am not mistaken, Clem patched the font rendering before releasing it.

Re: Linux Computer For Seniors

I agree. :) But, they do give a 19 inch monitor, plus they provide guidance and technical support, which I think makes up for the cost. I like the fact that they included Unity shell desktop, which is a great UI for casual usage. The toy keyboard is slightly cheesy though. On a related note check ou...

Sorry to whine, but I really don't like this (and dark panels in general). Is there anyway I can change this? :(

If there is no simple way to do so, it's okay. I could get used to it.
