Re: Another GDM3 question--where is the sound located?

I'm in a system without gnome, but maybe there's something in /etc/sound/events

Re: Will someone please check my planned nvidia driver inst

You can also try installing it with sgfxi (does LMDE come with it? I'm in plain Debian). Remove completely every nvidia package you installed (not the nv driver, of course) then run 'sudo apt-get autoremove --purge'. In case LMDE doesn't come with sgfxi, you can download and run it with cd /usr/loca...

Re: Why is Midori's font rendering so much nicer than Firefo

IDK how Firefox from the LMDE repo is compiled. I have here in Debian both FF 4 (from Mozilla) and Midori from git. While Midori renders fonts very well, FF's are awful. I was told that FF from mozilla is compiled without libcairo support but Iceweasel is compiled with this support and renders fonts...

Not so long ago there was a person with the same problem (I think in the Debian forum) because he had a conflicting xfce theme too.

LMDE is compatible with Debian 'testing', that is currently 'squeeze'.

Re: Unsettling buzz upon logout

The proper fix would be to edit /etc/gdm3/greeter.gconf-defaults

Code: Select all

# Play system beeps - especially the one when the greeter is ready
/desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds false

Re: Python: ImportError

You may have to downgrade anything that was pulled from the experimental repo. For that you need to force the installtion of the version from testing of those packages with aptitude (apt-get doesn't do that).

Re: Lots of additional packages during update

One way is to boot to the command line, remove gnome-core and install the packages that used to make gnome-core: eog gedit gnome-applets gnome-control-center gnome-icon-theme gnome-menus gnome-panel gnome-power-manager gnome-session gnome-settings-daemon gnome-terminal gvfs metacity nautilus yelp 1....

Re: Annoying Authentication during Shutdown/Restart

It's not inactive. If you use sudo, for instance, there's a timeout during which the root user is active.

Thanks, sumski. Now I could translate those messages.

Re: Down grading to debian?

Open Synaptic, click the source or origin filter in the left-hand column (I don't know the exact name since my system isn't in English), select the linuxmint repository (actually there are two of them: main and non-free), mark for complete removal whatever you want to purge and click Apply.

Re: Annoying Authentication during Shutdown/Restart

There must be something running as root.
That happens for instance if you mounted some partition with nautilus, if you're logged as root in another virtual terminal, I think with wicd too etc.

Re: Is MintUpdate the best way to keep LMDE up-to-date?

Thanks for all the comments. I've now installed secipolla's sudo apt-get install debdelta followed by sudo apt-get update && sudo debdelta-upgrade and I've also run Vincent's sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and both seemed to do things without stuffing up everything else. If I unde...

Re: Is MintUpdate the best way to keep LMDE up-to-date?

secipolla and Wrinkly, I installed debdelta and ran the exact command specified by secipolla. The apt-get update worked as normal, but debdelta upgrade returned a request for three file names and an advisory to check "--help". From there and the man page for debdelta, I learn that debdelta is inten...

Re: LMDE Newbie (SOLVED)

I know you marked this as solved, Wrinkly. But this is important. Install the debdelta package because it allows you to not need to download the whole new packages but just the difference between the current version in your system and the new version. sudo apt-get install debdelta Then before you up...
