Re: Restoring files removed by Software Manager

Hi Oldbwl, Files/Libraries are only removed when they are no longer needed, which may include a file with one name replacing another file with a different name. If you install a program which results in some files/Libraries being removed it is because they are no longer needed. So, if you then remov...

Re: Should I remove a PPA?

Hi CtrlAltDel, If you remove it you will miss any future updates. No, it won't downgrade to a lower version. Disadvantages. If the server is slow updates will take longer to find and download. If the server is often offline then Update Manager will give an error. I also use the mc3man PPA and it wor...

Re: email link in Opera lacks user dir permissions

Hi gubmint, "~/.config/opera" is the user profile directory. Where did you get Opera from? From Opera's own site or somewhere else? Did you install Stable or Beta version? It sounds like an install gone bad. 2 things to try: 1. Delete the folders ~/.cache/opera and ~/.config/opera. Then try again. 2...

Re: email link in Opera lacks user dir permissions

Hi gubmint,
I don't see anything resembling a user dir when searching for all files containing "opera."
That's interesting. I have an opera folder in ~/.cache and one in ~/.config.

Re: MintUpdate not installing packages, just reloads

Hi WiR3D,

Try the following in a terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update && sudo apt install --reinstall mintinstall
Also, don't start Synaptic with "gksudo synaptic". Use instead "pkexec synaptic".

Re: email link in Opera lacks user dir permissions

Hi gubmint, I'm using Opera 30 and Thunderbird on LM 17.2 and mailto links in Opera open Thunderbird just fine. I never had to change permissions on anything. One thing you might try: In Thunderbird: Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced make sure "Always check to see if Thunderbird ..." is disabled. I kn...

Hi folti,

What it's called depends on what DE you are using. Try this. Settings -> Keyboard -> Application Shortcuts. Find what is started when you press Alt-F2.

Re: glxgears and hardware acceleration

Hi zaileion,

I don't have a Radeon card but it sounds like a vsync issue. Is the Catalyst Control Center installed? If so, and you haven't already done so, you might want to check if vsync is disabled.

Re: `udisksd`: automounts from ISO, but not from local insta

Hi TomRoche, I can't speak for Mate, but in Xfce make sure "thunar-volman" is installed. Then run thunar and in the menu bar: Edit -> Preferences -> "Advanced" tab make sure "Enable Volume Management" is enabled. Then click "Configure". In the pop-up window in the "Storage" tab enable what you think...

Hi ruokz,

When you say "eula ok" does this mean that when the eula appears you put a check mark in the input box and then clicked ok? I only ask because I forget that once.

Re: A Bug Report

Hi Monsta, This worked, but it was not straightforward. After reinstalling grub-common on LMDE2 i checked the contents of /etc/grub.d/10_linux. It was the same as before the reinstall. So I extracted the file from the .deb file from the reinstall and checked the contents. This was indeed the...

Hi TomRoche, I think I may have put you on the wrong track when I asked The question is, why isn't Xorg starting? From what you posted it is clear that Xorg is starting, but experiences a severe error. Are you using the default Nouveau video drivers or have you installed any Nvidia drivers? Have a l...

Re: separate upgrades: systemd-logind error on user@1000.ser

Hi TomRoche, When you next boot and get to tty1, don't login. Try ctrl+alt+F7 to see if the MDM login screen is hiding there. If not try ctrl+alt+F8. If not ctrl+alt+F1 will get you back to tty1. buncha b!tching[1] about sound hardware: `If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should use...

Re: separate upgrades: systemd-logind error on user@1000.ser

Hi TomRoche, At the moment you are using sysvinit to start up the system. 'systemd-shim' is needed for those programs that expect systemd to be installed when it isn't. If you install 'systemd-sysv' then sysvinit (sysvinit-core) will be removed and you will now be using systemd to start up the syste...

[Solved] A Bug Report

I currently triple boot LM17.2, Debian (tracking test), and LMDE2 (tracking test). The grub menu is from LM17.2. In the grub menu each system has a default entry and an "advanced options" entry. For both LM17.2 and Debian each entry mentions which kernel it is referring to. LMDE2 does not. Entries f...

Re: What is different with LMDE2 from LMDE1 ?

Hi ron_h, Most of the differences will be "under the hood" and thus not noticeable to the user. You may get a newer version of your DE with some cosmetic changes or added features. You may get newer versions of some apps you've already installed that may look slightly different. It really is hard to...

Re: Download APT file

Hi qbsmd,

I'm not sure what you mean by an "apt file". I'm guessing it's not a .deb file. Could you post a link to the page containing the file and tell which link on the page you are trying to download?
